It started yesterday and the scores were:

Oklahoma State 8 Texas Tech 0 in six innings

Nebraska 6 Iowa State 0

Texas A&M 7 Oklahoma State 5

Nebraska 1 Oklahoma 0

Today so far the scores are:

Baylor 7 Missouri 3

Texas 1 Kanasa in eight innings

Later today Texas A&M plays Baylor at 4:30 P.M. and this may be on channel 643 on direct tv. Texas plays Nebraska at 7.

The tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament while the rest have to hope for an at large bid.

I studied it over and the way the Big 12 tournment does is that they invite all the teams for a tournament and seed them according to how they ranked in conference play at the end of the season. Two of the big 12 teams Kansas State and Colorado do not have softball teams therefore ten teams compete. On the first day the bottom four teams play a one game elimination game which then leaves 8 teams playing in a double elimination tournament. Texas Tech and Iowa State were eliminated yesterday.

Missouri defeated Oklahoma State 5 to 1. This gives Oklahoma State two loses and they are eliminated.

Oklahoma beat Kansas 5 to 0 and thus Kansas is eliminated. Kansas actually played a better game than you would think except for the first inning when they gave up four runs which you can't do against Oklahoma.
This leaves alive in the tournament six teams which consist of Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas A&M. No matter what happens there is a strong possibility that all these teams will be invited to more post season play.

The winners bracket continues today with Texas A&M playing Baylor and Texas playing Nebraska. These teams have won their first games so the losers will not be eliminated.

Unfortunately the Lady Aggies do miss their ace pitcher who was injured in practice this week. The game is on tv on FSN. At the top of the second Baylor is winning 6 to 0.

Bottom of second Lady Aggies got a run so it is 6 to 1 now. With one out the Lady Aggies had a runner at second and third and the batter hit the ball out to rf who threw to third base to get the runner coming from second. Before the out the runner on third was able to reach home and score. Second innning over.

Lady Aggies scored 2 runs in the fourth inning but unfortunately for them they gave up 4 runs so at the end of four innings it is Baylor 10 Texas A&M 3. More updates later tonight.

Baylor beat the Lady Aggies 11 to 4.

The Aggies lost 11-4, but leadoff batter Jami Lobpries went 2 for 4 and scored a run. Last year at this time she was playing SS for the Wharton Lady Tigers helping them return to Austin. She is now starting as a freshman after the Aggies CF has gone down with an injury. Last year playing in the 3A playoffs, this year in the Big 12 tourney. What a great player! I'm an orange-blooded Longhorn, but we are all rooting for you. My hope is for the Horns to win the tourney and the Ags to get a good seeding in the NCAA tourney. Good luck!

Texas held on to beat Nebraska 3 to 0. Thus far Texas and Baylor are the only two teams with no losses. More updates tomorrow.

Phil do you know who was the Aggies starter in the loss to Baylor?

PhiI C

Kep I think it was Lisa Gorzycki (spelling?) who pitched a little over three innings but they used two other pitchers also. One was Gibson but I don't remember the other one.

I saw where some Aggie player had like 18 HR's. I haven't followed Aggie softball much (except for checking the box scores) but who is she and where is she from? Wow, I am impressed.

one pitcher is not going to win you the whole thing John....she might get u far but she cant pitch 6 games in a week....tourney time in softball is MUCH different than the regular season...u need 2 really good pitchers to go really far and yall have one great pitcher and then an ok one...

eh, i know that i'm talking in a mental sense, when you know that you have big key to your offense out for the big 12 tourney, don't you think that kind of affects your confidence as a team

just noticed something while watching the replay of the BU/A&M game on FSN....the fence is 190 ft. away in left field in Oklahoma but at Getterman Stadium (baylor's softball field) it is 220 ft......no wonder Baylor is scoring so many runs...30ft. is a big difference, balls that would be fly outs at Getterman are going over the fence....

I'm afraid that Aggie John is right. It would have been different if they had their ace. Softball is not like baseball because I remember two years ago UCLA's ace pitcher pitched four games in two days and was magnificient as UCLA won the National Championship.

Today in the first two games we have two elimination games with Oklahoma vs Texas A&M followed by Missouri vs Nebraska. The losers are eliminated. Ironically Texas A&M and Oklahoma were the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and now one of them will be eliminated soon. At 5 P.M. Texas will play the winner of the Texas A&M vs Oklahoma game and Baylor will play the winner of Missouri vs Nebraska. If Baylor and Texas bothwin they will play tomorrow at 3:30 P.M. for the Championship. If either or both lose their will be elimination games tomorrow at 11 A.M. The Championship game will be televised by FSN.

well at least we are set for a playoff spot

Phil C

Oklahoma eliminated the Lady Aggies 6 to 2. No doubt the Lady Aggies will be invited to the playoffs and with their pitcher back they will be a different team.

In the second elimination game Missouri is ahead of Nebraska 4 to 1 after four innings.

Phil C

Missouri beats Nebraska 5 to 1 so Nebraska is eliminated. Not at 5 P.M. today Texas plays Oklahoma and at 7:30 P.M. tonight Baylor plays Missouri. These are the final four teams.

Texas beats Oklahoma and is in the championship game tomorrow at 3:30 P.M. In the other game Missouri was ahead of Oklahoma 4 to 0 but the game was stopped in the first inning due to bad weather. They are supposed to resume play tomorrow at 10 A.M. and if a needed game is to be played it will follow immediately after that game (which would be the case if Missouri hangs on to win). Then at 3:30 the championship game. Weather may be bad though.
We will see.

actually Phil, that is the exception not the rule....and UCLA that year had a good number 2 pitcher that helped them get through the trounament to that point....the number 1 pitcher for a team cannot pitch every game of the NCAA tournament, u have to have a good number 2 for you to move on...the number 1 pitcher might pitch 8 or 9 games of the tourney but for them to pitch every single game would be almost impossible barring some miracoulus feat....the UCLA girl that pitched the last 4 games at the softball college world series was a feat that was considered miracoulus at the time and that was just the last 4 of about 15 games to get to that point....u have to have a number 2 pitcher to win those 4 or 5 games the number 1 cant pitch...

The tournament was resumed today with the Missouri vs Baylor game at the bottom of the first. Baylor got a run but they left three on base which could have been a big first inning for them. At the end of one it is Missouri 4 Baylor 1.

My time is limited on reporting on this great event this afternoon because I have to briefly stop by and give regards to Riflearm who has just recently graduated from college and then I must go to the Sinton vs Pearsall Softball Game 2 (starting at 3) and hopefully it is necessary Game 3 to follow.

At the end of four innings Missouri is winning 8 to 1 over Baylor. If Missouri wins they will both have to play another game to see who plays Texas for the Championship at 3:30 P.M. If Baylor comes back to win they will play Texas.

Phil C
05-14-2005, 12:16 PM
Missouri wins 9 to 2 over Baylor. Now the two teams have to play another game with the winner playing Texas at 3:30 P.M. for the Championship.

A big advantage for Texas since the team that plays will already have had to play two games already but they had that advantage two years ago at the NCAA National Championships and still lost out.

Hey Once I noticed that they said the Missouri pitcher pitched three straight games yesterday for Missouri! She had to pitch twice against Baylor and they won and even though they lost to Texas the third game she still did a good job. Three straight games in one day and she still did well. Hmmmmmmmmm!
