BOSTON (AP) -- The son of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski stole his father's identity and ran up thousands of dollars in debt before he died last year, according to the elder Yastrzemski's lawyer.

Michael Yastrzemski son incurred debts including an IRS lien for $46,000 in unpaid taxes and credit card debt that attorney Neil Abbott would describe only as being under $100,000.

He had the same name as his father but went by his middle name. Abbott said he impersonated his famous father to get the credit cards.

"Carl isn't responsible for his 40-something-year-old son's debts," Abbott told the Boston Herald. "And as these things pop up, we try to get to them and explain the situation and get them resolved. But it's hard. It's his son, God rest his soul."

Michael Yastrzemski died last September at 44 from complications following hip surgery. The younger Yastrzemski was a standout baseball player at Florida State and played in the minor leagues, reaching Triple-A.

At the time of his death, he was living in Westfield and working at a Northampton supermarket.

Collection companies have pursued the elder Yastrzemski for payment, but Palm Beach County Court records indicate he hasn't paid, the Palm Beach Post reported.

In March, a judge in an arbitration session ordered Carl Yastrzemski to pay MBNA $28,380. There is no evidence he paid.

"This just takes a long time to resolve," Abbott said.

Yastrzemski, who is a Red Sox batting instructor, had no comment, a team spokesman told the Post.
