The field is set for the 2005 UIL state golf tournament, which will include seven area schools seeking state titles in four different divisions.

Woodsboro and Flatonia will represent the area in Class 1A, Refugio will be the lone representative in Class 2A, while Cuero and Yoakum will represent Class 3A, with Memorial making the trip in Class 5A.

Four of the seven teams will be making return trips to the tournament from last year, with Yoakum seeking to defend its 3A title.

In fact, Yoakum will be making its 24th consecutive trip to Austin and will be vying for its ninth state title.

Yoakum will be represented by its A and B teams at the tournament for the third-straight year and will take to the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin on May 12-13 along with the Cuero boys and Memorial boys.

Yoakum claimed its eighth title last year with a 10-stroke victory over Monahans carding a two-day 666.

Three members of that winning team return this year and include Emily Kvinta, Allison Guettner and Ashley Chumchal. Jasmine Biehunko and Erin Daltry, who were part of the B-team squad that finished seventh, will join them.

The Yoakum A-team claimed the Region IV title by easily outdistancing its B-team counterparts with a 331-323-654. The B-team added a 764 to beat out Devine by 11 strokes.

Yoakum will also take the best 36-hole regional score into the state tournament that will also include four other teams from last year's field. Those teams included Snyder from Region I, Longview Spring Hill and Atlanta from Region II and Bellville from Region III. The rest of the field includes Sweetwater and Sealy.

Cuero also makes a return trip to Austin and will be looking to improve on last year's fourth-place finish.

The Gobblers will enter this year's tournament as the Region IV runner-up after finishing four shots behind Llano. Llano tallied a 640, while Cuero finished with a 644.

Only two teams from last year's field returns alongside Cuero. A new state champion is a certainty after last year's champion, Slaton, failed to qualify.

Canyon, in Region I, and Columbus, the Region III representative, both return, with Canyon as the possible early favorite having turned in the best regional score at 606. Canyon also finished third last year, nine shots ahead of Cuero. The rest of the Class 3A boy's field includes Graham, Mount Vernon, Atlanta and Palestine.

Memorial, making its first state appearance since 1989, will join Yoakum and Cuero on May 12-13 at the Roy Kizer Golf Course.

The Vipers finished as the Region IV runners-up and enter a very stout field that includes last year's champion Southlake Carroll from Region I, third-place finisher The Woodlands from Region II and Region IV champion San Antonio Churchill.

Churchill won the Region IV title with a two-day 619, while Memorial finished with a 628.

"This one's really sweet," Vipers coach Ben Johnson said. "We've had so many close calls over the last decade only to come up one to five strokes short."

Other teams in the Class 5A boy's field are Midland Lee, Rockwall, Houston Memorial and Deer Park.

The Refugio Lady Cats will also be making a return trip to Austin to take part in the Class 2A tournament on May 9-10 at the Jimmy Clay course.

Three other teams from last year's field, including state champion Lago Vista, will join the Lady Cats. One of the big advantages for the Lady Cats is that they defeated Lago Vista by 29 strokes for the regional title.

Jacksboro, Nocona, Cross Roads and Warren also qualified for this year's field.

The Woodsboro boys and Flatonia girls will represent the area in Class 1A and will play at the Morris Williams Golf Course on May 9-10.

Joining Woodsboro in the boys field will be Iraan, Stratford, Throckmorton, Baird, LaPoynor, Overton and Utopia. Iraan is the defending state champion.

Rounding out the girls field with Flatonia will be Shamrock, Wellington, Baird, Throckmorton, Martin's Mill, Meridan and Utopia. Baird, Throckmorton and Shamrock claimed the top three spots last year.

Flatonia's R.J. Lester and Yorktown's Todd Leist also earned berths as individuals to the state tournament. Lester was the Region IV-1A champion with a 77-72-149, while Leist tied for first in the Region IV-2A tournament with a 152.

I keep reading the name of the course in Austin as Roy D Kizer - I wonder if that is the same Roy Kizer who was the golf pro in Cuero in the early 70's   Jason, any idea?
