Wylie leads District 4-3A contingent at regional track
By Troy Shockley / Reporter-News Staff Writer
April 29, 2005

District 4-3A has been one of the toughest in the state this season in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and softball.

Judging by its entrants into today's Region I-3A track and field meet, it looks as if another sport can soon be added to that already lengthy list.

All five of the district's schools will be represented at this weekend's meet, taking place at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium.

The purple and gold of Wylie High School - which won both the boys and girls district championships in Snyder two weeks ago - will be the most often-seen 4-3A colors at the meet, with a combined 46 entries. Clyde High School is next with 12 girls entries and six boys entries for a combined 18.

Snyder High School will have 11 boys entries and five girls entries, Sweetwater High School will have 11 boys entries and four girls entries and Merkel High School will have six girls entries and one boys entry.

Gates open today at 9 a.m., with the girls long jump kicking off the meet at 10 a.m. Other field-event finals taking place today are the girls discus and high jump and the boys discus, high jump, pole vault and long jump.

The majority of the day's running events will be preliminary heats, the bulk of which start at 2:30 p.m. with the girls 400-meter relay.

There are, though, two races today that will be finals - the boys and girls 3,200-meter run.

Things kick off Saturday one hour earlier, with gates opening at 8 a.m. and the girls triple jump starting the competition at 9 a.m. The girls will also compete in the pole vault and shot put on Saturday, while the boys will have the shot put and triple jump.

The girls 400-meter relay will again start the day and is set to begin at 1:15 p.m.

The top two competitors in each event will qualify for May's state championships in Austin.

Sweetwater kicked major tail in Odessa. Wylie only had one boy make it to Austin I think and that was Soph. sprinter Gary Edwards.

The funniest thing ever is that Wylie won state in '01 with only 3 boys. To win state without even having a relay team is pretty dang impressive. Heck, its downright ridiculous.

How about district 4-3A winning another Region 1 title. Add this to Wylie and Snyder both winning the Region in football. It would be nice if one of our baseball teams could make a run at the region 1 title as well.

yeah we had 3 guys competing in 8 events combined.

John Lampert
100 dash
200 dash
Long Jump
Triple Jump

Brett Unger
Shotput
Discus

Evan O'Connell
1600 Meters
3200 Meters

The only gold we took was Lampert in the Long Jump. Courtesy of Blanton of Forney he took 2nd and 3rd in the two sprints. What created the win was an (at the time) career best mark in every event with the exception of Lampert in the triple jump where he had 2 fouls and his third jump was only in the mid-44 ft range (which still got him 4th or 5th) so that the team got points. Lampert was very fast but his long jump marks were some of the longest in the country. He had the 3rd longest as a junior (01) with 25 ft 1/2 in and was the longest in the country as a senior at 25 ft 10 1/2 in. However, he is now at Purdue and playing football. He moved from safety to linebacker before last season and plays mostly on special teams.

Here is a quote from his bio:
Rated as three-star prospect by Prep Football Report ... honorable mention all-state, first team all-district and first team all-conference as junior and senior ... second team academic all-state as senior ... academic all-district as junior and senior ... named District Best All-Around Player his senior season after recording 135 tackles, including five for loss, with 12 pass breakups, nine interceptions and one fumble recovery ... also caught 17 passes for 400 yards (23.5 average) with five touchdowns ... team was 32-6 last three seasons, including state finalist finish his junior season and district championship his senior year ... coach was Hugh Sandifer ... also participated in track and field

I love that they actually name his coach in the bio. Granted they do it for all the players...but still nice to see Sandifer getting his due!
