District 4-3A has been one of the toughest in the state this season in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and softball.
Judging by its entrants into today's Region I-3A track and field meet, it looks as if another sport can soon be added to that already lengthy list.
All five of the district's schools will be represented at this weekend's meet, taking place at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium.
The purple and gold of Wylie High School - which won both the boys and girls district championships in Snyder two weeks ago - will be the most often-seen 4-3A colors at the meet, with a combined 46 entries. Clyde High School is next with 12 girls entries and six boys entries for a combined 18.
Snyder High School will have 11 boys entries and five girls entries, Sweetwater High School will have 11 boys entries and four girls entries and Merkel High School will have six girls entries and one boys entry.
Gates open today at 9 a.m., with the girls long jump kicking off the meet at 10 a.m. Other field-event finals taking place today are the girls discus and high jump and the boys discus, high jump, pole vault and long jump.
The majority of the day's running events will be preliminary heats, the bulk of which start at 2:30 p.m. with the girls 400-meter relay.
There are, though, two races today that will be finals - the boys and girls 3,200-meter run.
Things kick off Saturday one hour earlier, with gates opening at 8 a.m. and the girls triple jump starting the competition at 9 a.m. The girls will also compete in the pole vault and shot put on Saturday, while the boys will have the shot put and triple jump.
The girls 400-meter relay will again start the day and is set to begin at 1:15 p.m.
The top two competitors in each event will qualify for May's state championships in Austin.
