Thank goodness both coaches agreed to play Thursday to keep everybody "fresh". I guess the baseball coaches knew they'd have alot of players at the track meet and scheduled a tuesday game. :)

Hmmm thats interesting since he ran both the 200 and the 100m along with the 4x100m relay at the Distric Meet......guess he had to choose between the 200m and the 100m seems like a great kid not being selfish and being a team player and deciding to run the 4x200 relay which he anchored today to a win....we all know he would have made it to state in the 100m dash.

The running results are not posted on that site yet /maybe tomorrow. I was checking out the schedule for the State track meet ....look's like 3a/4a with 1a and 2a joining in the field events will begin Fri.May 13 with the first session field event's and 3200 meter run scheduled to begin at 9:00 and the second session *running event's* 3a-4a scheduled to kick off at 6:00 in the evening.

TexasTrack doesn't have real time results, so it won't be of much help until the conclusion of all the meets, he receives the results, and he inputs the results.

He does have prelim's for many of the regions up, but we'll have to wait for the finals.

Why would Brandon James not pursue a 100 record? If he is gonna be running a 9.99 by the time he is a senior, seems like that would be the better event to try and get better in.

gobbler84
05-01-2005, 08:52 PM
You know thats the thing. He's not a senior he's a Junior and as a Junior he thouht his best race was the 200. Have you ever seen anyone run a 21.04 in the 200? As a senior maybe his best race will be the 100 but now its the 200.

All of this talk is almost worthy of another thread. In a sport like track where individual performances are really what it is all about, does a coach do what is best for the team or the individual athlete? That begs another question, is track a sport or a demonstration? I have seen so many coaches that just sit back and watch a kid run with God given ability and proclaim, "that's my boy out there". Field events are a different matter. Coaching is everything there. That is evidenced by Orangefield and Yoakum producing the top pole vaulters in the state through the 80's and 90's. But really, how much coaching is there in the 100 meters? I know Cuero's coaches are trying to win state and getting two relays to State increases their odds. They did so at the expense of one their athletes. Is that right? They have the top 100 meter man in the state and they hold him out of the race to try and win another relay. They give up a sure 10 points and hope for 20. Perfect handoffs. No pulled muscles by the other members of the team. No false start. I don't know. I hope it works out for the best but I don't know.
I really don't know now that I have seen Sweetwater and Waco LaVega's times. Cuero is hoping for 56 points. Two relays plus the 200 plus maybe third in the 100 (Williams). Waco or Sweetwater could get 60 or 70 if things went right for them. Then the strategy would be for naught. What do you do. What is best for the team in a sport that is not really about teams or what is best for the kid and his career? Makes you think.

I heard they made the coaches pick up the athletes medals in an envelope at the end of the meet.? ? ?

there is no way that can be true

crabman
05-02-2005, 08:41 AM
That is true. No medal ceremonies. They sold out of everything at the concession stand on Friday, including water. The P.A. system is horrible. The announcer sounded like Ben Stein. Buhler, Buhler, Buhler.............The wind was steady 20mph with gusts to 30 out of the north. It was right in the runners faces. They wouldn't move the timing stand, even though they had a day to do it. The only thing that was done well was the starting. Not a single false start during the finals. The guy who was on the gun was the usual guy they have every year. Kicks his foot up on the firing of the gun. The guy getting the kids in their lanes and giving instructions was Gene Kana and his son from El Campo. He is a regualar at Regionals, Texas Relays, and the state meet. Also no DQ's for out of lane or out of zone. Too bad about the weather and having to run into it.

scrub c
05-02-2005, 09:39 AM
also heard they made the coaches pick up the athletes awards in an envelope at the end of the meet? ? ?

and the team championship trophy was not awarded to the champions (Cuero-boys) (West Columbia-girls) until 30 minutes after the meet was over and nobody was in the stands.

He's most likely a member of an AAU or USATF club. That's where the future Olympians come from. That's where his success will be determined. It's kinda' like HS volleyball. The college recruiters don't even bother with HS matches. They hit the USA club volleyball tournaments where all the top players are.
