It's almost certain Yoakum's Dayne Grahmann won't get a chance to run in the UIL state track and field meet for a second consecutive year.

Grahmann finished second in the Class 3A 100-meter dash at last year's state meet. But his hopes of returning to Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin this year were dealt a severe blow when he pulled a hamstring at the Luling meet on April 2.

The injury kept Grahmann out of last week's District 26-3A meet and unless he heals quickly enough to gain a spot on the Bulldogs' 400- or 800-meter relay teams, he won't compete again this season.

But Grahmann can look forward to running next season after signing a letter of intent this week to attend Texas State University in San Marcos on a track scholarship.

Grahmann suffered a knee injury as a freshman, but bounced back to run 10.54 seconds in the 100 as a junior, the top time in the area last season.

Grahmann overcame a bad start to finish second at the state meet in a time of 10.82, which is also the best time he's run this year.

Yoakum qualified for the Region IV-3A Meet, which is set for April 29-30 in Kingsville, in the 400 and 800 relays.

But unless Grahmann's hamstring is fully recovered, he won't run.

"I thought Dayne could help us on the relays," Yoakum coach David Markert said. "But unless the hamstring is fully healed, you don't want to take a chance of him pulling it again."
