View Full Version : Dawn at Socorro on TCM in May!!

You will have two chances to see this great western. One will on Monday, May 2 from 8:30 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. and again on Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. This is a great western and should not be missed. If you can't watch it then be sure to record it. TCM is on channel 256 on Direct TV. They only show it a few times a year so don't miss this chance. It is one of the greatest movies ever made and Alex Nicol's great supporting role is a classic and Edgar Buchannan is also excellent as the Sheriff of Socorro. Search Dawn at Socorro on the 3a downlow web site to get more information on my reviews of this great movie. Don't miss this opportunity in May!

Also on May 2 at 7 P.M. TCM is showing another great Rory Calhoun western called The Hired Gun. It is not as good as Dawn at Socorro but is a very good movie. I saw it when I was 9 and am looking forward to seeing it next month too. :)

I don't know if it is available at the video rental stores but I can let you borrow a tape whenever you have a free night to watch it. It is only about 1 1/2 hours long.

Last September I wrote a note asking my niece if she wanted to watch Dawn at Socorro. She wrote back saying "When it snows in Sinton!" We all know what happened last Christmas Eve! :)

She watched it and actually enjoyed it! :)

i didnt say i wasnt interested. just trying to help out a fellow poster, Yaya. after the 2 sorry movies i rented this weekend, im willing to watch anything. can you belive "Sideways" was nominated for so many oscars.:foul:
and oceans 12 was a real stinker. i liked the oceans 11 remake, but neither holds a candle to the original 1960 with my man Frank and the gang.

Phil C
04-18-2005, 08:46 AM
Sorry 44 but I meant that for Yaya! The sad thing about the great movie North by Northwest is that it was finished in late 1958 but not released until 1959 and then it was up against the great Ben Hur movie. If they could have released it in 1958 or 1960 it probably would have won the oscar for any of those years. Bad timing does it. Some movies are released when the quality of movies are not up to par. There have been a few movies that have won oscars that wouldn't have been nominated in other years. Others were just overlooked by the Oscars when they should have got some nominations and won some oscars such as Dawn at Socorro and ...................

pirate44
04-18-2005, 08:54 AM
Hey Phil C, was "Shane" nominated or a winnner of any oscars?

Phil C
04-18-2005, 09:36 AM
Shane was a great movie and did receive several oscar nominations including best picture but didn't win any. I can't argue with the winners of that year though. The wierd thing about that year was that it was a rule that if you received a starring role you couldn't be nominated for best supporting actor which was latter dropped. Had that rule not been in effect Montgomery Cliff would probably have won best supporting actor oscar for From Here to Eternity. Frank Sinatra did win best supporting actor oscar for that movie and he was great and starting his acting career. Jack Palance was nominated for best supporting actor for Shane and he was great in it and it started his acting career. Van Heflin was great in Shane and probably deserved an oscar nomination for best actor but there was a lot of competition and he did receive much acclaim for his performance. The Best Actor Oscar was won by William Holden for Stalag 17 which can't be argued with. Also the director of Shane was nominated but he didn't win either.

The real shame of that year was that From Here to Eternity was filmed in black and white and ruined a chance to have shown off some beautiful Hawaiian scenes. I recommend that you see the colorized version if you can. It is showned regularly on TCM but unfortunately they show the original black and white version.

he was ok i thought, but is was such a tiney role, i cant believe he was nominated.
Sinatra i thought was great as Maggio. he really had to humble himself for that role. but being married to Eva Gardner at the time probably humbled him enough:D

Phil C
04-18-2005, 09:49 AM
I also forgot Pirate that the kid in Shane, Brandon de Wilde was also nominated for best supporting actor. Palance would later as you know finally get an oscar for City Slickers in 1991. Shane was also nominated for best writer but didn't win.

Shane did win one oscar and that was for Best Color Cimatography. The color and scenes in it are beautiful.

Strange that Jean Arthur the mother in Shane wasn't nominated. Other actors in the movie though not nominated but did do good jobs was Ben Johnson as one of the bullies and Elisha Cook Jr. as the homesteader that Palance kills. And of course who can forget Alan Ladd as Shane. A good performance also.

Phil C
04-18-2005, 11:36 AM
Stalag 17 was probably better in black and white because that fitted in the mood of the picture but From Here to Eternity should certainly have been done in color.

Thank you Mike! I hope to see you at the softball game in Mathis Friday if you are announcing.

The best picture oscar winner in 1960 was The Apartment and if I am not mistaken this was to be the last black and white movie to win the best picture oscar with the only exception being the 1993 winner Schindler's List.

They had another old 1953 movie on TCM last night called Second Chance with Robert Mitchum and Jack Palance. It must have been made before Shane. It was a good movie though and Palance was very good as the sneering villain. Not a bad movie and I will post when it is on again. It isn't as good as Dawn at Socorro so don't expect me to be as persistant. :)

I watched the last part of the western movie Jericho on the Western Channel during lunch hour. It looked like it is a good movie. It was made in 2001 so that proves that good movies are still being made as well as in the older times even though I love the old movies.
