Sanger High School’s girls basketball head coach was in Denton County Jail Friday evening charged with having an improper relationship with a student.
Bambi Michelle Ferguson, 30, of Krum, is accused of initiating a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student at the high school. The offense is a second-degree felony with a punishment range of two to 20 years with a possible fine not to exceed $10,000.
Ferguson was being held on $10,000 bail Friday night and could not be reached for comment.
Sanger school Superintendent Jack Biggerstaff released a statement saying Ferguson has been placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation by school and law enforcement authorities. Citing personnel issues, he declined further comment.
According to information on the school’s Web site, Ferguson is a Hamlin native and has been employed as the girls basketball coach and physical education teacher since 2002.
Texas Ranger Tracy Murphree investigated the case. According to an affidavit he filed in Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 to obtain an arrest warrant, Ferguson told a witness during an athletic practice that she was in a sexual relationship with a female student, whom she named. She told the witness they had exchanged numerous text messages in the course of the relationship.
"The juvenile was interviewed and admitted to several sexual encounters with Ferguson both at the Sanger High School and at Ferguson’s residence in Krum," Murphree stated in the affidavit. He declined further comment.
This is not the first incident involving a teacher accused of improper relationships with students in the Sanger district. In November 2001, Curtis Wayne Roberts, who was assistant principal at Clear Creek Intermediate School, pleaded guilty to eight charges of sexual misconduct with children and was sentenced to three 20-year sentences and a 10-year sentence, all to be served concurrently.
In November 2004, Sanger teacher Nadia Agha Reid resigned after being arrested on charges of endangering a child in connection with physical abuse and neglect of her 10-year-old stepson.
