In 1976 I got a '69 Renoult (Smaller than a VW bug, motor in back also). My sister and I had to totally rebuild the engine part by part using a maintenance mnual for guidance. We did all of the work our selfs without adult help. Now THAT was a learning experience. Kept having to replace the throw out fork while we learned not to "slip" the clutch. My sister never stopped slipping the cluth until I refused to help her pull the motor for the third time so that the fork could be accessed. She neved slipped the clutch again.

When I was in Jr. High, I inherited my mom's '66 Mustang coupe so I guess you could call that my "first car." Never did get it running though. Mowing our neighbors' lawns for $20 a pop didn't pay enough to get that money pit moving.

So when I turned 16 my dad bought me a 1986 GMC shortbed with a 305 for $3200 from an old-timer up in Del Rio. Super nice truck. It was 10 years old at the time and only had 64K miles, had automatic, cruise and tilt, and was in almost showroom condition. I had to compound the paint, but other than that the chrome still shined and the interior was still immaculate. Man I loved that truck.

I said my first car was an Escort...but that was the first car I bought myself!

My dad bought a Triumph Spitfire when I was 13 that I was supposed to get when I was 16....by that time he had decided parts were too hard to come by so he sold it to the guy down the street. To this day it is still parked beside that guy's house...it has never moved since we pushed it over there...that's the only time I ever got to to drive it! :(

I got a '65 Mustang, white w/ red interior before my 16th birthday in 1974! I had to learn to drive a standard, too, ugly though it was at the beginning. Had the coldest after factory A/C and an AM radio--never got an 8 track player in that car, had to wait till I got a '74 Ford Torino Sport for that. Spent hours Friday and Saturday nights driving around town in high school--great times!

I started driving in 78 and took my grandfathers 72 Ford LTD home to wash for him. He was supposed to come and get it. After two weeks I called and he said just keep it until he came for it. He never came for it...that car was a tank...I loved to punch it and listen to the roar of the engine.

In 1980 at 16 years old, I borrowed $500 to buy a 76 Monte Carlo. My boss (the owner of a small grocery store) was the one I asked about borrowing. He was a BOD at the local bank, so instead of handing me the cash, he cosigned a note at the bank.
What do you know, my 1st car and my first commitment. Damn, I've been making car payments ever since.

Anyway.... the car was maroon and faded. Looked like crap to my stuck up girl. A little compound, wax, and a set of wheels off of a corvette and it looked great. The car lasted much longer than the girl.

That sounds so much like mine...except it was a blue Ford...we used to load a bunch of guys in the back seat...and then they could not get out...the door handles did not work from the inside of the back seat doors....that car hauled a lot of people...and like you said ..."only with an AM radio" We made our fun!

Mine was a 1963 Corvair Monza Spyder with 150 horse when the super charger kicked in, 4-on-the-floor, white leather seats, red carpet and door panels, black exterior. Had been on the dealer's floor for six weeks and he wanted to move it. He cut the price from $3,000 to $2,460. My daddy co-signed the note because I was graduating in 3 months from college.

I had driven my parents cars. They made me learn on a stick shift before they traded it in, but I never got my own car before graduation.

Took it out north central expressway one early a.m. and hit 105 before slowing down for a big 18-wheeler and McKinney. Would get 25 m.p.g while traveling 70-75 mph. Loved that car!!! but then Ralph Nadar said Corvairs were unsafe at any speed and the value dropped like a rock. Got $250 trade in for it when I bought a 1968 VW Karmann Ghia for $2,800. Love those prices!!!

My first car was a 1949 Ford Flat-head V-8. It would run 92 mph in 3rd gear and 71 in 2nd gear. I traded it for an outboard boat and motor to shrimp out in Lake Sabine when I ran out of money in my Freshman year in college. That car was a good one with a 100 horsepower engine.
