and he did a great job. Some quarterbacks that go to college become defensive backs and never qbs again but in 1964 Joe Dixon of Texas was an exception. He was an outstanding defensive back. In fact when the Jets won the 1969 Super Bowl he was a defensive back for the Jets. But in 1964 he was a senior at Texas and had been quarterback at his home town but at Texas he had become a first rate defensive back. But at that time Darrell Royal preferred to have a senior as his starting quarterback (He later changed with other quarterbacks such as James Street). Even though he had good underclassmen he chose Dixon to be his quarterback for his senior year because of his desire for a senior quarterback. Dixon did very well as Texas was 10 - 1 during the year and beat Alabama in the Orange Bowl.
