Lady Dawgs stun the competition at Big Bell Classic

Wow, how about those Lady Dawg softballers! This year's group has certainly got game, to say the least.

No, their not braggin', cocky, or overconfident, they just have a good mixture of talent, a strong desire to win, and fear no one which apparently is a great recipe for success according to their 7-0 record in games that count by UIL. Throw in pool play action and these girls have double the wins.
Their most recent success over the past week has been their greatest as of yet.

First off last week the Lady dawgs traveled to Liberty Hill to take on the always tough Lady Panther squad.

With all the run rule games and victories under their belt, there have still been questions as to how good this years Lady dawg group really is.

Some thought Liberty Hill would give a more accurate reading, for those believing that here's your forecast, Lady dawgs 14-Panthers 4.
Yes, the Hill sort of got leveled. Jessica Barefoot pitched and improved to 3-0 on the season with Kim Lester catching.

Amanda Heine would lead the way at bat going 3 of 4 and scoring 2 runs.

Kim Lester was 2 of 4 with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI's, and 2-SB's.

Maegan Linehan put 2 of 3 in play and scored twice.

Barefoot also went 2 for 3 and scored 1 run.

If there were still questions looming the Killeen Big Bell Classic should have more than answered them.

This tournament hosted 16 teams including several top 10 ranked 4A-5A softball teams in the state.

Just to mention a few Belton, Southlake Caroll, 4A preseason #1 Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Midland Lee, you get the picture, a tourney loaded with talent and our Lady dawgs brought home the tournament championship trophy.

That's incredible, but that's also what this group expects each time they step on the field.

Here's how they did it. March 4 was pool play and game one for Burnet was a battle with the Lady Dragons of Southlake Caroll. Barefoot would pitch to Lester in this match, and the Burnet defense would give a solid effort but a solo SLC homerun in the third inning would be the difference as the Dragons held on for a 1-0 win.

The Lady Dawgs would square off with Midland Lee next. Field pitched to Linehan in this contest. the two teams battled it out to a 1-1 tie. Amanda Heine led off with a base hit, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Vanessa Kyzar, and scored on an Ashley Field single.

Bracket play would follow on Saturday and Burnet's first competition would be the 4A preseason #1 team in the state, Little Cypress.

The Lady dawgs held tough against a 6 inning 10K performance by LC-M's tough pitching.

Kim Lester scored on a throwing error in the top of the fifth inning, LC-M tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Time expired and forced an international tie breaker where you start with a runner on second.

Amanda Heine bunted Kailey Knetsch to third, and a RBI single by Ashley Field brought in the game winning run.

In the bottom of the sixth LC-M got their lead runner to third with one out, but an excellent play by SS Amanda Heine and catcher Kim Lester caught the runner trying to score on a ground ball.

Jessica Barefoot was the winning pitcher, and Vanessa Kyzar recorded one of the best hits of the game with a triple.

Burnet would advance to play Belton next. Belton's bunt and slap game gave Burnet's defense trouble in the first inning scoring two runs.

Burnet came back strong in the bottom of the first, Vanessa Kyzar got on with a one out single. Ashley Field then tied the game up with a line drive opposite field homerun over the right field fence. Field added one more RBI in the third when she hit a double that plated the final run.

The Burnet defense closed the game out facing only 9 batters in the last three innings.

The defensive highlight of the game was a 1-6-3 double play by Barefoot, Heine, and Thomas.

Burnet took the field against Midland Lee in the championship game. The Midland Lee girls were ranked preseason #4 in state in class 5A.

The game would only last 3 innings due to weather conditions, therefore it was not an official game. The teams were considered co-champs, but since Burnet held a 1-0 lead they received the first place trophy.

The single run would come from Jessica Trahan. In only her second at bat of the tournament, utility player, Trahan hit a lead off home run in the third inning that ended up being the only run scored in the game.

Freshman Ashley Field pitched and recorded five strikeouts in three innings.

Kadee Herrera was also a perfect 1 for 1 at the plate.

This was the second tournament championship this year for Burnet.

A big congratulations to Coach Goetz and all the following Lady Bulldogs, Amanda Heine, Vanessa Kyzar, Ashley Field, Sarah thomas, Kim Lester, Kadee Herrera, Maegan Linehan, Jessica Barefoot, Kailey Knetsch, and Jessica Trahan.

They are up to 9-0 now!

BTW, the freshman, Ashley Field is having quite a year. She also was selected first team all-27AAAA in basketball and excels in track and field.
