The Gonzales varsity Apache baseball team traveled to Yoakum this past weekend to compete in the annual Bulldog Tournament and posted a 2-1 record to claim the consolation championship.

In the consolation final on Saturday afternoon against Ganado, the Apaches broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth by plating four runs and holding on to a 7-4 victory.

After the Apaches plated two runs in their first at-bat and one run in the second, the Indians came back to plate three runs in the third to knot the game up at 3-3. Ganado managed just one run in the bottom of the sixth to close the scoring.

Scott Hindman started on the mound for the Tribe and worked five innings to collect the win while David Schautteet came on to pitch the final two innings to earn the save. Hindman gave up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two. Schautteet allowed one earned run on one hit while striking out three and walking one.

Schautteet and Hindman each collected two hits and two RBIs in the contest to pace the Apaches at the plate. Thomas Soto and James Dubose also added two hits a piece with Soto tallying an RBI and Dubose scoring two runs. Lindemann added an RBI single as well for the Tribe.

Before making it to the consolation final, the Apaches had to rally from a 6-run deficit to post a 7-6 victory over Austin Travis on Saturday morning.

The Rebels plated five runs in the first and one in the second to quickly claim a 6-0 lead before Gonzales managed two runs each in the third and fourth to cut the lead down to two at 6-4. In their final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, the Tribe plated three runs to pull off the come back as Lindemann delivered a game-winning, two-run single.

Soto went the distance for Gonzales, giving up just two earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two. Schautteet paced the Apaches at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Lindemann finished 2-for-4 and Soto added an RBI single.

In the tournament opener on Friday night, the Apaches dropped a 3-0 decision to defending Class 3A state champion La Grange as Leopard hurler Stetson Hrbacek tossed a no-hitter.

A three-run double by La Grange's Nathan Neiser in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the game winner.

Schautteet, who received all-tournament recognition, started on the mound for the Apaches and in his first game of the season, the junior hurler allowed just five hits while walking six and striking out two.

For the tournament, Schautteet worked eight innings on the mound, giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking seven. At the plate, he went 4-for-6 with four RBIs.

Yoakum and Columbus were set to play for the championship on Saturday night, but the game was cancelled due to rain. La Grange, after defeating Gonzales in the opening round, fell to Columbus in its second game, but defeated Goliad, 5-0, for the third place trophy.

The Apaches, now 2-3 on the season, will travel to Elgin tonight (Tuesday) before competing in the Stanley Krist Tournament in Schulenburg and Flatonia this weekend. The Tribe's opening game of the tournament will take place on Thursday at noon against Shiner St. Paul.
