Good job Tarpons. Great win over a good 4A program that was in the playoffs last season. Sounds like y'all bounced back nicely after last week's debacle. Keep up the good work next week against Falfurrias!

From what I understand from my source, this game really should have been a shutout. PSJA Memorial scored their TD with 9 seconds left in the game against Port Isabel's 2nd team defense.

Maybe the loss to La Vernia last week was a good wake up call after all....

Congrats, Tarpons! The D looked great, not to mention the offense, could have done without the penalties and fumbles though. Guys, got to hang on to the ball! Fumbled again in the red zone.

Fumbled again in the red zone. What's with the fumbles? Are the fumbles from bad Center/QB exchange? Bad QB to RB handoff? Or bad pithces from QB to RB???

The Tarpons look like they will be a force in Region 4 D2 along with Yoakum, Rice and Liberty Hill. Congrats on the win and keep it up.

I can see opponents looking at the films, instructing their players to start stripping the ball. But, it's early in the season, I expect that problem will be addressed and taken care of.

Hey TFINT,- here is an article for you to read, from the Brownsville Hearld

Port Isabel jumps on Wolverines early
Football: Tarpons errupt for 21 points in second.

By Roy Hess
The Brownsville Herald

PORT ISABEL — Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial coach Joe Sanchez Jr. had a feeling the law of averages was about to catch up with his Wolverines.

That’s exactly what happened Friday night at Tarpon Stadium against Port Isabel.

The Wolverines came into the non-district matchup with a 3-0 edge over PI in the brief football series between the two schools.

Not many teams enjoy such an advantage over PI. It was the Tarpons’ turn to win this time as they tallied 21 points in the second quarter en route to a 30-7 triumph over the Wolverines.

“I’m not one to make excuses because PI’s got a good ballclub,” Sanchez said. “We battled with them good the last three years and won, but this year they got us.”

A safety in the first quarter combined with a pair of Johnny Nieto short touchdown runs in the second period plus a 39-yard punt return for a score by Joe Arevalo provided PI with a 23-0 halftime lead that pretty much decided the contest.

PI was coming off last weekend’s 29-17 season-opening loss to LaVernia at Gregory-Portland and Tarpon coach Monty Stumbaugh said the team knew it was important to have a strong effort in its home opener. Friday marked the first time for PI to play on the newly sodded turf at Tarpon Stadium.

“It (victory) was big for us,” the PI coach said. “People were saying this and that, you know. Our kids play hard and they knew we needed to come out and play that way for four quarters. They came out ready to play and we played hard the whole ball game. We just made mistakes that we can’t afford to make later on down the line (in the second half).

“We feel pretty good about where we’re at, but we’re by no means satisfied,” he added. “We’ve got a long way to go.”

The first points of the game came at the 4:59 mark of the opening period when Wolverine punter Jaime Alvarado tried to field a punt snap that was a little high. He also bobbled the ball and went back to pick it up on the ground. He then backtracked about 20 yards into his end zone, giving PI two points rather than risk allowing a TD.

The lead increased to 9-0 with 11:44 showing in the second quarter when Nieto bulled into the end zone on a 2-yard run, capping a six-play, 48-yard drive. Erik Martinez added the first of his four extra points.

A little more than nine minutes later, PI’s Joe Arevalo field a punt at the Wolverines’ 39-yard line and returned it all the way to the end zone down the right sideline for the Tarpons’ second TD. After an onside kick recovery by PI, the Tarpons went 35 yards in seven plays to score with 16 seconds left in the half and take a 23-0 edge with Martinez’s kick.

PI went up 30-0 on a 33-yard TD pass from quarterback Gabriel Alvarez to Nieto with 6:48 remaining.

The Wolverines avoided the shutout when Alvarado broke through the middle of the line and into the end zone from 1 yard out with nine seconds left. Ramiro Villanueva added the conversion.

PI finished with 287 yards — 173 rushing and 114 passing. The Wolverines had 93 total yards — 81 rushing and 12 passing.

Nieto rushed for 58 yards and caught three passes for 61 yards. Teammate Joshua Trejo added 74 yards rushing. Alvarez completed six of 10 passes for 114 yards.

The Tarpons are at Falfurrias next Friday.
