Panther swimmers break school record, qualify for state meet

The Fort Stockton Panthers met their goal for this swim season. They "made a dent" in the state meet.

Their goal was to qualify for state, and they did just that last weekend in the 200-yard medley relay and in the 100-yard breast stroke. The relay team is composed of sophomores Matt Agres and Jay Orona and juniors Denver Freeman and Jason Rice.
In Friday's prelims of the Region I UIL Swim Meet, the Panthers finished third and edged past the school record in the event. In Saturday's finals, they smashed the school record by another two seconds to finish second in a time of 1:46.38. Agres swam the backstroke in 26.92 seconds; Freeman swam the breast stroke in 27.94 seconds; Rice swam the butterfly in 27.26 seconds; and Orona swam the freestyle in 24.25 seconds.

"Only the first place finisher in each event from each of the eight regions automatically qualifies for the state meet. The rest play a 'waiting game' to see if they are in the next "top eight" times from all regions," Fort Stockton swim coach Mike Dupree said. "The official results were posted Sunday night listing all qualifiers and showed we had qualified for the state meet in both the 200-medley relay and the 100 breaststroke (Freeman). That's impressive. We are in a 24 team region that consists of Class 4A-and-under schools with up to 1,925 students enrolled."

The Panther relay team qualified as the third of eight "at large" picks for the state championship finals to be held Feb. 25- 27 at the Joe Jamail Swim Center at the University of Texas.

The relay team also was faster than the winning times from two of the other seven regions and is seeded 9th with the top 16 teams scoring. Freeman, who qualified in the 100, is seeded 11th and is within one second of five competitors ahead of him. He dropped almost two seconds off his Friday prelim time in the finals, finishing in 1:03.99.

More accolades

"All four of the boys in the 200 medley relay had their best times. The boys on the relay team gave much credit to sophomore Jay Orona, who was, for most of the year, ranked as the 'fifth fastest' sprinter on the team, which often left him out of the fastest relay," Dupree said. "For many months, Jay was encouraged to 'just keep swimming, just keep pushing.' His hard work paid off with a split time almost two seconds off his best. All the splits were important, but without that split there would have been no school record, and no state-qualifying for the relay.

This is the second time in three years that the Panther swim team has made the trip to the state finals.
