Roan resigns, Panthers in search of new coach
By Richard Nelson, Pioneer Editor/Publisher

The search for a new athletics director for Fort Stockton ISD begins Friday when the school board meets to approve the selection process.

Gary Roan resigned last Friday to take the athletics director/head football coach position at Stamford ISD, near Abilene. FSISD named John Gossett, girls' head basketball coach and assistant football coach, interim AD.
"Everything looks good," said Gossett, who indicated he intends to apply for the permanent position. "I'm here to hold down the fort, make sure spring sports are running smooth."

FSISD Superintendent Leonard Kent said he hopes to have a new AD in place by April 1. The process, going before the board at 4 p.m. Friday, includes naming a site-based steering committee to review all of the applications and select candidates to interview. The committee will also be responsible for developing the interview questions and conducting the interviews. The committee will consist of 12 persons composed of the following people:

€ Chaired by the Assistant Superintendent

€ 2 board members

€ 2 community members

€ High School Principal

€ Middle School Principal

€ 1 middle school classroom teacher

€ 1 high school classroom teacher

€ 2 coaches

€ Girl's Athletics Coordinator

The committee will recommend two candidates to the superintendent and he will recommend one name to the board. The board will then have the option to approve or reject this recommendation.

Roan took the Panthers to the football playoffs during two of his five seasons as head coach. Last season, the Panthers were District 3-3A co-champs with a 4-1 record and were 6-5 overall after falling to eventual state champion Abilene Wylie in the bidistrict playoff.

Roan recorded 23 wins and 28 losses at Fort Stockton. He took the Panthers to the playoffs for just the eighth and ninth times in their history. Before the 6-5 2001 season, the Panthers last went to the playoffs in 1978.

Stamford is in District 4-2A with Anson, Coahoma, Hawley, Stanton and Colorado City, which advanced to the Class 2A Division I quarterfinals last year. The Panthers lost their 2004 season debut 8-7 to Colorado City.

Roan has indicated part of his decision to leave Fort Stockton for the Class 2A school was derived from it location to family.

Offensive coordinator and head track coach Kevin Hall will join Roan at Class 2A Stamford, but will finish out the school year in Fort Stockton.

Interesting makeup of the committee.
I am at a loss as to why they wouldn't have more school board members.
