Sweetwater boys track coach Joe Paty is going out on a good note.

Retiring after 16 years at Sweetwater High School, Paty saw his charges win the Region I-3A track meet at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa Saturday.

As far as anyone can recall, said Paty, the Mustangs have never won the regional meet.

Sweetwater took the prize with 64 hard-earned points, most of them by the winning 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

"All year long we knew we had a chance if the relay teams did well," said Paty by phone Saturday, "and they came through today."

Jeremy Thompson, Josh Jackson, John Eric McDonald and Michael Williams won the 800 relay in a time of 1:28.14, while Jackson, Thompson, Williams and Randyn Tenery were the winning combination in the 1,600 with a time of 3:20.45. Tenery, a senior, also won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a time of 38.32.

Childress was a distant second to the Sweetwater boys with 46 points.

The Mustangs are sending five boys to state. Sparkle Brewster, winner of the discus Friday, is the lone Sweetwater girl advancing to Austin for the May 8-9 meet.

Meanwhile, the Wylie Bulldogs also qualified athletes for the state meet.

Cameron O’Connell won the 800 in a time of 2:00.55, while teammate Adam Baugh took the 200 in a time of 21.72.

The Wylie boys finished fourth in the team standings with 32 points.

Kristin Wallace of Wylie won the girls 100 hurdles in a time of 14.91, while teammate Amanda Eichhorst also qualified for state by placing second in the pole vault (9-6).

Other Big Country boy athletes qualifying for Class 3A state meet in Austin are Larry Huitt of Breckenridge, who won the 110 hurdles (14.52), the Merkel 400 relay team and the 1,600 relay team for Sweetwater.

For the girls, Ballinger’s Samantha Burgess won the 800 (2:18.45), and Snyder’s October Wells was second in the 200 (25.98).
