View Full Version : Heisman Trophy Should Have Beens?

Do you have any opinions on who didn't win the Heisman Trophy but should have? This is not to put down the winners as unworthy but that you feel someone else was more worthy and is just an opinion discussion and not intended to be a put down. I think Jimmy Brown should have won it at Syracuse in 1956 instead of Paul Hornung at Notre Dame. Hornung was a major surprise because he is the only player to win for a team that had a losing record. Hornung was a great player and did good in the NFL but Jim Brown should have got it in my opinion and he was the better Pro Football player. I don't know why he didn't win it but it may have been because he was black (remember this was in the mid 1950s) and maybe Notre Dame had more influence at that time because of the tradition. I know that several voters were so upset that they never voted in the Heisman race again.

I thought Alex Smith should've won it this year and that LB Marvin Jones out of FSU should've beat Gino Torretta of Miami back in the early-90's. I thought Darnell Autry of Northwestern should've beat Eddie George back in '95 and that Mike Vick and Joe Hamilton should both have got more votes than Ron Dayne in the last race of the millenium.

Recently, they've turned the Heisman into a "best player on the best team" award or a career acheivement award (like Dayne). I guess the purist in me still thinks of the Heisman as its original intention... the award that goes to the BEST player in college football. The MVP award. The easiest way for me to judge that would be to take that one player off that team, replace him with an average player and try to imagine how much worse that team would be. Darnell Autry single-handedly turned Northwestern into a Big Ten power back in '95. Eddie George played for powerhouse Ohio State, which has always been good but still finished second to the Wildcats in the Big Ten standings. NW went on to the Rose Bowl with only a great running back and a great coach (Gary Barnett) to brag about.

you guys are forgetting the most obvious one. Brian Bosworth, probably the best college LB ever. i can't stand the guy, but he was a stud in college.

It's kinda funny when you look back at some of the winners and then look a little deeper and find out who DIDN'T win that same year. For instance...

*1982---George Rogers over Eric Dickerson
*1989--- Andre Ware over Emmitt Smith
*1996---Danny Wuerffel over Peyton Manning
*1999---Ron Dayne over Michael Vick

Just a few examples. Not to say that the guy who won didn't deserve it, but it's weird how so many who have won it didn't do nearly as well at the pro level as some of the Heisman "also rans."

You are correct! I always think that Walker won the Heisman the same year Georgia won the national title (1980). :o
