AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Kenn Kasparek (Weimar, Texas) worked five scoreless innings in his first career start while three Longhorns posted multiple-hit outings as No. 1 Texas (4-0) posted a 7-1 victory over UT-Pan American (2-2) in its home opener in front of a 4,108 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
Texas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) tripled to left center with one out and came home on a groundout to the right side off the bat of Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas). UTPA would threaten to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when the Broncs placed runners on the corners with one out courtesy of a pair of singles, but Kasparek induced his next batter to hit into an inning-ending double play to keep UT on top. Then, in the bottom of the frame, the Horns upped their lead to 4-0 as Clay Van Hook (Brenham, Texas) reached third on a three-base error to open the inning and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Dooley Prince (Sulphur, La.) before two singles and a walk loaded the bases in front of a walk to Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.) and a sacrifice fly to right from Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas).
One inning later in the bottom of the fifth, Kainer made it a 6-0 ballgame in favor of UT when he followed base hits by Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) and Beamon with a two-out, two-run single up-the-middle to extend his career-long hitting streak to six games dating back to last season. While the Broncs would break up Texas' shutout bid when they strung together three base hits, including a two-out, RBI-single from Joeb Gutierrez in the seventh, UT immediately answered with a run of its own courtesy of a RBI-single from Beamon in the bottom of the inning to give the Longhorns a 7-1 advantage. From there, senior Clayton Stewart (Angelton, Texas) worked two innings of one-hit relief for the Horns to cap off Texas' fourth victory of the year. Earning the first win of his college career was Kasparek, who allowed only two hits while fanning three over a career-best five innings, while UTPA starter Dane Mason shouldered the loss despite working five frames in the start.
Keying the Longhorns' offense on the afternoon were the trio of Johnston, Stubbs and Beamon, who each picked up a pair of hits while combining for five runs and three RBI, and Kainer, who drove in three runs during a 1-for-2 outing.
