One of the Northern Generals during the Civil War was General Winfiled Scott. He was from the South originally but his conscience didn't let him join the Confederacy. He loved the game of chess though and was one of the great Paul Morphy's (World Champions of Chess 1858 to 1860) victims. Not only was he a General of the Armies but he was also a nominee to the U.S. Presidency and actually ran against Franklin Pierce in 1852 as the Whig Candidate. If Scott had been elected, chess would probably be more popular today than baseball or football! :D

During the civil war he was very old. He was well respected as a soldier & officer, but just an old man during the civil war.
