Would you explain the Designated Runner Rule for UIL Softball? Thanx

Bull as much as I love softball I think this is one that an expert should handle. We have some coaches and umpires on the web and hopefully they will respond and keep me straight. I think you are asking about the courtesy runner rule. As I understand it a runner can be substituted on the base at any time for the catcher and pitcher but only one can be used for any other position. I could be wrong though but that is the way I understand it. The idea is to get some runners on the bases who may be faster than the actual batter. I will ask around too.

Found the following in the 2004-05 UIL Softball Manual.

11. COURTESY RUNNER REGULATIONS. National Federation Courtesy Runner regulations.
a. The team at bat may use courtesy runners for the pitcher and/or the catcher as soon as they reach base. The same runner may not be used for both positions. Neither the pitcher nor the catcher will be required to leave the game under such circumstances.
b. Players who have participated in the game in any other capacity are ineligible to serve as courtesy runners.
c. A player may not run as a courtesy runner for the pitcher or the catcher and then be used as a substitute for another player in that half inning.
NOTE: An unreported courtesy runner is an illegal substitute.
PENALTY: For illegal substitution, such substitute shall be ejected.

Thanx Phil C and AP Panther Fan. My Freshman daughter has never played softball and the SB coach wants her to go out for the program at this position. She was halfway able to explain it to me but it was the first time I've heard of it. Now I have the full scoop.

You're welcome. I have re-read that rule several times and it is tricky. If I were a coach, I would have to check and re-check myself.

I think the part that states a courtesy runner cannot have participated in the game in any other capacity would probably confuse the heck out of me. Oh well, it is one of those where you almost need to have the rulebook in your pocket during the game.:D

Best of luck to your daughter! Softball is a great sport!

if im reading this right, you basically convince your sprint relay team to go out for softball and have them on standby for this position, which makes sense

Sounds like a plan....they just have to be content sitting on the bench because of the part about not having played in any other capacity.....

Aaron, make that darn link work for Phil C. ! It is not cooperating!

It does work. I wish more sprinters would also play baseball. We had a track star a few years ago named Marcus Charles (also great in football and basketball) who was on the relay team that got second at state in track. He was used as a base runner and could really run around those bases fast. He was a big contributor to the Sinton Pirates as they won state that year in baseball.

That reminds me of the Oakland A's in the mid 70's who had an Olympic sprinter named Herb Washington who never had an at-bat but was a designated base runner!
