In all my years in Texas, I have never been to Padre Island and I am planning to take the entire family down there in the next few months (Except Spring Break, of course). If some of you S.Texas folks would let me know how to find out good info about seasons, accomodations, possible beach house rental, eating places, etc., I would appreciate it. Is it still a great place to go? Thanks.

South Padre (Port Isabel), North Padre (Corpus Christi) or Mustang Island (Port Aransas)?

I've heard as much, but believe it or not, I haven't been either.

I would start by checking to see if their Chamber of Commerce has a website that you can possibly order information online. If not, you can always resort to Ma Bell.:D

When we went down to South Padre we rented a condo right on the golf. It was very pretty. Just about any of the places you see to eat are good. PI has some good steak places. The only thing that scared me when we first went down there was that big bridge.

Mustang Island at Port Aransas is pretty cool too. Condos on the beach, etc. I'm sure there are websites you can look at.

sinton66 has an idea about Port A. They for years have been trying to make their town more family friendly. It might be a good idea to split time on South Padre and North Padre. South Padre tends to have cleaner, whiter beache. North Padre tend to have more beaches, period.
Goodness the times I can('t) tell you I had at Port A in the 80's.:D

Their is also tons of good eating in Port Aransas, Rockport and the surrounding area.

After living in SA the last few years, I really miss the beach.

Does anyone know if the casino ship depart from Port A?

Thanks all---I'll try to remember this good info and continue to search sites on the Internet. It would still be nice to hear some of those Padre Is. adventures that many of you have probably had in years past. Maybe if I could talk PPHSFan and Sinton66 into coming along, we could make a "Geezers Gone Wild" video. Thanks again for your replies so far.

If you like tatoo shops, bong shops, and tshirt shops. Galveston is prettier IMO, more historical. Look at a pic of Destin Fla, compared to AP and SPI, you will see what I mean.

Our family loves S.P.I. We stay at the Seabreeze Resort (!-800-221-6448). A MUST place to eat is at the Black Beards resturant.(1-956-761-2962) The bridge that takes you to the island is 2 miles long. Very nice place to vacation!!!!

the only time i have seen south padre island is on girls gone wild, and i live in sinton. I have always wanted to go during spring break, but it gets too wild that time of year. I don't get to go this year either so we are just gonna go to schlitterbahn.

www.sopadre.com, www.spadre.com, www.spionline.com, are some websites you can check out. As far as eating, check out Blackbeards, The Brewing Company, Louie's, Kohnami has good suschi if you like that. In PI check out Marcello's for Italian, Pirates Landing for a great view so-so food, and Isabel's is the hole in the wall for great cheap mexican breakfast and lunch.

Ingleside is eight miles from Port A. I love the Port A area (Mustang Island/North Padre) South Padre is fifty times prettier.

blackbeards and louies are pretty good places to eat or even have a good time. i was born in Houston and have been to galveston and to the CC beaches and I still prefer South Padre. I live in Donna now and when summer comes around its almost a trip every 2/3 weeks...plenty of nice places to stay beach side as well.

Also, since you are that close, you shouldn't pass the opportunity to spend an afternoon shopping in Mexico. Bet the wife would enjoy that!

Glassware and pewter are two of the coolest things you can shop for in Mexico.

I bought glasses (the kind you drink from) over there and then saw the same ones at Dillard's for 3x the price!:)

also when you hit highway 100 respect the law or you will get stopped. its a speed trap in Los Fresnos. I wouldnt reccomend going to mexico right now. There are some warnings out right now for valley natives to stay away as there has been alot of murders and cops harrasing tourist for there ATMs etc. Just a heads up...If you go during the day with several peeps im sure you will be alright...Id stay away though...

you know its funny my in-laws from the valley dodnt like for anyone to go across because it is so dangerous. The news reports all the bad things that happen down there but up here we never hear anything bad about the borders or the scams they
have going on.

I normally go to Progresso, which seems to be fairly safe and full of winter Texans...but you never can tell. It is always best to stay in a group and if you have young children, keep them nearby.

yea progresso is the only place I would feel safe. not much there just one main street, a lot of shops, and taco stands. there hasnt been any real danger in progreso. the only reason I didnt mention it was because I wasnt sure if they would make the drive from the island all the way to progreso. probably about an 1hr 15 minute drive.
