So what were the Top 40 Games of 2004? The answer will be revealed over the next couple weeks as week start from #40 to #1. All Games in Texas HS Football's 16 Week schedule were taken into consideration and judged by its impact, competitiveness, intensity among many other things. Timing was a huge factor in some of the games that were selected in this list. When we began the search of the Top 40, we simply narrowed our list of games to around 200 potential games. from there we eliminated them by the criteria we used above. Now, we realize that each person has there own list and opinion of where each game shall be ranked. Feel free to give us your input on the THSF Message Boards about the list. We will be revealing three games a day over the next two weeks ending with #1 on Friday January 21. So with being said, here is the start of the list beginning with #40:

Jasper/Gilmer didn't make the Top 40. I respect Chris and the work that he does, but I do think the list could have been stronger.

I didn't see where the Jasper/Gilmer game was listed in "missed the cut". I saw some other Jasper games listed. But not that one. If whoever compiled the list would go over to LoneStarTeams and listen to the archive, that game would be #1. :D

Apparently someone has had a change of heart. I promise you the game was there! I may be biased, but I don't see how that game could be anything other than Top 10!

I'm always down for more East Texas High school controversy...anyone hear that SLC used in-helmet mikes in their game against Lufkin which are illegal in high school. I heard the refs found out and made them not use them 2nd half. TX Mike, where are you at? What's the official ruling on that?

ok first of all...the snyder and sweetwater game would be in there prolly at like 5, i think Abilene High vs. South Lake Caroll would be #1 or 2, southlake vs lufkin would be in my top ten as opposed to being whatever it was on 'YOUR' list, i would also Abilene Wylie vs. Decatur in the playoffs, Abilene vs. Cuero, Holiday vs. Crawford....i think thats who they played in our bowl....ummm....Arlington Lamar vs. Allen would def. be in my top 10....ill think of a few more later

I saw the Sweetwater/Snyder game, but I can't say given all the games he had to choose from that I would have put that game in my Top 40 either!

wow not that its the end of the world, and as Rm pointed out, there are other classifactations than 3a to choose from, but the castleberry vs lake worth game that went 4 ot's isnt anywhere on the list. granted neither team is the best in the state, but still 4 ot's is alot of footbal!!! i didnt even see it on the list of games that didnt make it. whatever though. its still a pretty good list.

What a rip-off! Castleberry beats Lake Worth in (4)Overtimes as it rained from start to finish. The game wasn't even on the A-B-C failed to make the cut list, let alone the Top 40. Oh and before you say it was because neither made the playoffs, check out game #24.

Silsbee vs Jasper #1 and WO-S vs Bridge City-overtime game#2; WO-S vs Jasper to kick the season off with the two top rated 3A teams #3; Snyder vs Sweetwater #4; Jasper vs Gilmer; several Palestine, Barbers Hill and Kirbyville games.....

I attended the #12 game Abilene Wylie vs Decatur and the #2 game Abilene Wylie vs Cuero. Both were great games. Both were played with more emotion than I've ever seen in a game. I spoke with some of the players after both games and I was told that the Decatur game was a more gratifying win, but the Cuero game won the state championship, so its hard to say which game was better for the players. It would probably depend on who you spoke with.

The regular season game between Cuero vs Sinton should have been somewhere because that was a great game. Cuero won 35 to 28 and except for a dropped pass it would have gone to overtime. Cuero was ranked No. 1 in 3A and Sinton about No. 7. It should have made the list somewhere. Oh well.
