Cobb to coach at all-star game

By JASON ROSAS

Some fires and passions just can’t be put out.

Norman Cobb, who was the head coach of the Caldwell Hornets football team from 1992 through 1998, has been selected to coach in the 2005 High School All-American Bowl Classic.

The game will be played in Shreveport, La., at Independence Stadium, home of the Independence Bowl, on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

The game will feature high school all-stars from around the United States and will pit the East against the West.

Cobb will be responsible for coaching the defense for the West team, while Cobb’s longtime friend, Les Koenning Sr. will coach the offense for the West. Koenning is father of Texas A&M offensive coordinator Les Koenning Jr.

Cobb retired last year and is now living back in the Brazos Valley after stints at Palestine, Fort Bend Baptist and Brazos since coaching at Caldwell.

“I just never have gotten it out of my blood,” Cobb said. “It’ll be a fun thing.”

He has also been invited to speak at the Greater Houston Regional Coaching Clinic on Feb. 4-5. Other speakers invited are Koenning, Todd Dodge, Gary Joseph and David Kiser.

Cobb was invited to speak about defense at the clinic and is the only retired coach invited.

“It’s kind of nice,” Cobb said.

Before arriving in Caldwell in 1992, Cobb spent seven years at Mexia, where he led the Blackcats to a Class 3A state title in 1989.

Prior to coaching at Mexia, he was a defensive coordinator at Cypress Creek under Koenning for two years and coached at Nacogdoches for two seasons.

Cobb first made a name for himself at Groveton from 1974 to 1979 where he never lost a district game.

Groveton is now a perennial football power, and Cobb gets credit for the emergence of that program.
