The only coach at UT with a losing record in football was Jack Chevigny who coached from 1934 - 1936 and had a record of 13 - 14 -2. He played football for Notre Dame under Knute Rockne and scored the winning touchdown against Army in 1928 after Rockne's famous win one for the Gipper speach. When he scored the winning touchdown he is supposed to have shoulted "This one's for the Gipper." He later coached at Notre Dame's sister school St. Edwards in Austin and was hired to coach UT in 1934. The team had a good 7 - 2 - 1 year that year and ironically UT beat Notre Dame at South Bend that year and that was one of two games that forever got Texas and Southwest Conference football on the front pages (Rice defeat of Purdue the same day 14 to 0 was the other game). Unfortunately he didn't have success the next two years going 4 - 6 and 2 - 6 -1. After coaching Texas he served as an attorney for the Texas State Tax Commission. Shortly after that he went into the oil business in Illinois where he was very successful. He served his country in World War 2 and became a first lieutenant. He died fighting for his Country at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Found on his body was a locket dedicated to him as an ex Notre Dame graduate who was able to defeat ND in football. He may have been a loser based on the record but in real life he was a winner and paid the ultimate sacrifice as many military people did for the freedom we enjoy today.
