I thought it'd be neat to compare populations and stop-light intersections...

If you don't all of your stop-light intersections, that's fine, just guess...

Cuero's population is around 6,700, it was around 7,200 in '98 but the flood forced a lot of folks to relocate until houses were rebuilt etc... so I believe the population is accually back up...

We have 6 stop-light intersections to my count...

Diboll has about 5,000, w/3 stop lights! WOW! there is a "loop" that goes from 1 light to the next. Not helpful, just a waste of time. So if you ever go through Diboll and want the quick way around, stay on US 59 and don't take loop 210.

We dont have any stop lights out here. I live out in the country between Bellville and Sealy and Columbus. All of those are small communities of about 3,000 to 5,000 in population. I am not originally from any of these communities but I pull for all of the area teams.
We do have a flashing light that is fairly close.

Accually, I've only been to Inks and Travis (same dang river, just different lakes)... The day I went to Inks I wanted to go to Buchannon (my uncle talks about the striper-fishing there all of the time) but I wasn't familiar with the area and kinda needed to get back to Austin, but I've always wanted to go... This Spring Break I was going to take my ex-girlfriend (minus the ex at the time) on a guided striper tour there (since she has never gone striping) but we ended up flying to Deleware (I was ticked)...

I'll be up there later this year or early next year for a striper tour, either that or my uncle will be going soon with his down-riggers etc...

Gilmer as of 2000 had 4,799. GHS had enrollment of 681 at last report. GISD takes in about one-third of Upshur County through the middle portion of the county on a north-south axis. County has a population of about 36,000. There are seven districts in this county, one 3A, five 2A and one 1A. And part of Gladewater ISD extends in a fingerlike projection north toward Gilmer.

Many of the people in the Gilmer/Upshur area work in Longview. Some even make the commute to Tyler.

We have a Wal-Mart Supercenter, Dairy Queen, Sonic, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell/KFC, Jack-In-The-Box (under construction), an excellent locally-owned Tex-Mex restaurant called La Finca and a real good Chinese restaurant as well run by people from China.

We have about six stop lights, but the Buckeyes never stop at any of them on Friday nights. :D

Spreakin of small towns, those of us who grew up in a small town will laugh when we read this.
Those of you who didn't will be in disbelief ... but trust me every
one of these are true.

1) You can name everyone you graduated with.

2) You know what 4-H is

3) You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the
middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at
the party because of the scratches on their legs from running
through the woods when the party was busted, see #6.

4) You used to "drag" main.

5) You said the "F" word and your parents knew within the hour.

6) You scheduled parties around the schedule of different police
officers, since you know which ones would bust you and which
ones wouldn't.

7) You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks
knew how old you were (and if you were old enough they'd tell
your parents anyhow).

8) When you did find somebody old enough and brave enough to buy
cigarettes, you still had to go out into the country and drive
on back roads to smoke them.

9) You knew which section of the ditch to find the beer your
buyer dropped off.

10) It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.

11) The whole school went to the same party after graduation

12) You don't give directions by street names or directions by
references. Turn by Nelson's house, go 2 blocks east to Anderson's,
and it's four houses left of the track field.

13) The golf course had only 9 holes.

14) You can't help but date a friend's ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.

15) Your car stays filthy because of the dirt roads and you will
never own a dark vehicle for this reason.

16) The town next to you is considered "trashy" or "snooty", but
is actually just like your town.

17) You refer anyone with a house newer then 1980 as the "rich
people"

18) The people in the "big city" dress funny then you pick up
the trend 2 years later.

19) Anyone you want can be found at the local gas station or the
town pub.

20) You see at least one friend a week driving a tractor through
town or one of your friends drives a grain truck to school
occasionally.

21) The gym teacher suggest you haul hay for the summer to get
stronger.

22) Directions are given using THE stop light as a reference.

23) You decide to walk somewhere for exercise and 5 people pull
over and ask you if you want a ride somewhere.

24) Your teachers call you by your older sibling's names.

25) Your teachers remember when they taught your parents.

26) You can charge at all the local stores or write checks
without any ID.

27) The closest McDonalds is 45 miles away (or more).

28) The closest mall is over an hour away.

29) It is normal to see an old man riding through town on a
riding lawn mower.

30) You've peed in a cornfield.

31) Most people go by a nickname.

32) You laugh your butt off reading this because you know it is
all true.

I'm surprised no one (footballgal) has mentioned Port Isabel in here, so I may as well do it. I'll mention all 4 parts of Point Isabel ISD.

1. Port Isabel - population 5,100 approx. 7 traffic lights, all along the main drag (TX Highway 100) First one is just past the high school as you head east, the 2nd is at the intersection of Hwy 100 and Hwy 48 which goes to Brownsville through the Port of Brownsville. The 3rd is in front of the Wal-Mart. 4th is at the intersection of Hwy 100 and Port Rd, which is in front of the school district's central office and leads to the housing projects area and the port just beyond. The 5th light is right in front of the Dairy Queen. The 6th is at the intersection of Hwy 100 and Longoria St., and the last one is right before you get on the causeway heading to South Padre Island. Port Isabel has a Dairy Queen, Sonic, Whataburger, Pizza Hut, Wal-Mart, HEB, lots of bait and tackle shops, and some REALLY good eats. Pirate's Landing (mostly seafood, but a bit of everything), Marcello's (Italian) and Isabel's Cafe (HUGE breakfast tacos) are a few of my recommendations.

South Padre Island - Population approx 1,200 permanent residents. Only a handful of students live on the island. It has about 5 traffic lights, all spread out along it's main drag, Padre Blvd. It also has a Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Whataburger, lots of hotels and condos for rent, the beach, the sun, the surf, and tons of great restaurants. Blackbeard's (mostly seafood), Sea Ranch (ALL seafood), Tom & Jerry's (everything), and Palmetto Inn (Mexican and Seafood) are my recommendations.

Laguna Heights - Population 1,100 approx. Mostly a low-income residential area. No traffic lights. A couple of small convenience stores, and Henry's Car Wash and Laundromat are basically all there is here. There is, however, a small boat dealership there onwed and operated by the Cavazos family. He'll get you a great deal.

Laguna Vista - Population 1,000 approx. Mostly middle-class and a few high income families live in this near 100% residential area. Only 1 blinking light, one convenience store, a public library, and a couple of day care centers. There is, however, the South Padre Island Golf Course located here, and surrounding it, lots of new homes and condos. Some channels are planned to be dug in front of some of the homes and condos that are closer to the bay, which will allow those homes/condos to include boat slips for access to the bay.
