Most experts say that Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant was the best NCAA Division 1 football coach ever. (I know that Coach Robinson at Grambling won more games but most of those wins did not occur in Division 1 football). But it is interesting to note how he matched up against Texas Darrell Royal. The two coaches were competitors a total of 4 times and the best Bryant did against Royal was a 3 to 3 tie in the 1960 Bluebonnet Bowl. The other three times Royal's Texas teams won. In 1957 Bryant's last year at Texas A&M and Royal's first at Texas the Horns won 9 to 7. At Alabama Bryant faced Royal twice more losing the 1965 Orange Bowl to Texas 21 to 17 and losing the 1973 Cotton Bowl to Texas 17 to 13. That means that Royal had a 3 - 0 - 1 lifetime record against Bryant.

Of more interest besides Royals first year at Texas Bryant (while at Texas A&M) also lost 2 other times to Texas in 1954 and 1955 while winning in 1956 which meant that while at Texas A&M Bryant's record was 1- 3 - 0 against Texas. Also of interest that while at Alabama Bryant's team met the Aggies in the Cotton Bowl in 1968 losing to one of his former players Coach Gene Stallings by the score of 20 to 16.

Just some interesting historical data.
