How close is your school to a major News Paper.

Jasper and Newton are both a little over an hour away from a major news paper. The Beaumont Enterprise. Because of that the coverage is slim throughout the regular season, then in the post season the coverage is a little more. But, still not enough exposesure to grant many all-state selections.

I am a little biased, but I have good reason. Not just because that I am a native of that area, but because both schools are deserving of state wide credit. Both teams are considered a powerhouse in what ever class they are in.

Jasper, this year is playing for a state championship, in years past has been a contender in both 4A and 3A. Has several grads playing D1 football.

Newton played in the 2A state game, in years past has been a 3A contender. Has several grads playing D1 football.

The only reason either school is not represented more on the all-state team is because the "Jasper News Boy" and the "Newton County News" doesn't get to vote.

My point; GOOD TEAMS need more media coverage thoughout the year, not just when they are the last teams in the area still playing.

Hey, that was a lot of typing for no replys.
I think I have Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome.

Can I atleast get an agree or disagree?:D

In terms of dailies, Tyler Morning Telegraph and Longview News-Journal both cover the Buckeyes. Our county borders on theirs. It's only 20 miles to L'view and 35 to Tyler.

I think this goes way beyond just whether there is a daily newspaper in one's area. I think it has to be a HUGE daily newspaper/media market, way bigger than Beaumont or Tyler or Longview. The all-state teams are dominated by players from the three or four largest metro areas, whether it is deserved or not.

As I understand it, the AP All-State Team is based on regular season performance. Manuel Johnson had a great regular season, but maybe the kid from Decatur did, too. I don't know. I know that overall Manuel's stats are now way superior, even accounting for the fact he has played one more game.

And he and his team are still playing. So when the TSWA selections come out, I expect Manuel to receive the accolade he well deserves. Counting regular season and playoffs, there will be no doubt he is the best QB in 3A.

BTW, the AP Poll did not consider Gilmer even to be a Top 10 team until something like the middle of October. Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine did not have us in the preseason Top 25. But Manuel Johnson was just named the Pace/DCTF Class 3A Player of the Year, so there is some justice anyhow.

Saw an article in the Lufkin Daily News this week. Headllines were Gilmer Plays in State Championship Game. Way down toward the end of the column there was a mention that they would be playing Jasper. Now Jasper is about 55 to 58 miles from Lufkin and Gilmer is a little over 100 miles. When I walk up to newspaper racks in Jasper to buy a paper, I see the Jasper Newsboy (Weekly) and the Lufkin Daily News (Daily) and a Houston paper. I wonder how many papers the Lufkin Daily News sells in Gilmer.

That's because the Lufkin paper and the Longview paper are owned by the same people and re-use headlines all the time.
