Correct answers win WTG (Way to Go!). Let's start with the first question. Name the athlete.

My father was a big football star in college and starred in pro football for the New York Giants. I didn't follow his footsteps in football but was one of the first big American soccer stars in the USA and a big part of getting soccer established and popular in the USA. Who am I?

Let's try a football one and this one may be more difficult than it appears.

I played on the NFL Champion Baltimore Colts teams in the 50s. I played in the NFL Championship Game between the Colts and NY Giants. Even though Pro football was popular this televised game started the popularity of NFL games and was a pioneer to today where playoffs and tv revenue is taken for granted. The 1958 game was the first overtime game ever and I scored the winning touchdown in overtime. Who am I?

Another tough football question.

I am considered one of the best offensive lineman ever. I played in Green Bay under the great Coach Vince Lombardi. I became very famous and even wrote a best selling book thanks mainly to the Ice Bowl Game between Green Bay and Dallas. I made the key block in the last few seconds that got our QB into the end zone for the winning touchdown. My opponent that I blocked claimed offside and for many years I considered it sour grapes. But modern replay and technology shows things that were hard to tell back then and now I had to conclude that my opponent was right. I jumped. Who am I?

WTG AP!!

The question would have been: I won the World Championship in 1972 by beating the Russians. I was the first American to win the World Chess Championship by head to head competition. I forfeited the championship in 1975 because of unfair rule changes that the World Chess Federation imposed. Who am I?

Well AP guessed ahead of time so I will ask another chess question. I didn't win the world chess championship in a head to head match because it wasn't done at my time but I am considered the first American World Chess Champion. I had a short chess career though. Who am I?

Now another chess question to give Holmes a chance:

I am from Holland. I was World Chess Champion from 1935 to 1937. In 1935 I won the World Chess Championship from my opponent who was the current World Chess champion. My opponent either showed up for most of our matches under the influence of alcohol or hung over from it. I was able to win a close match. Graciously I offered him a rematch in 1937. Unfortunately, he only drank milk during our rematch and I was defeated and he regained the championship. I was president of the World Chess Federation for several years. Who am I?

Gary Kasparov?

It was Mikhail Botvinnik of the USSR who was the World Chess Champion between 1948 - 1963 except for two one year period. In 1948 the world's best players played a world championship match since the former world champion had passed away. Botvinik won. He lost world Championship matches in 1957 to Vissily Smyslov and in 1960 to Mikhail Tal. He won the title back a year later both times. In 1963 he lost to Tigran Petrosian (spelling?) and rules were changed to eliminate rematches. Many people thought he lost to Tal and Smyslov on purpose by order of the USSR machine that wanted to have more world champions. This was never proved.

Kasparov was a good guess. He is considered by many the best chess player ever. He won the World Championship by defeating Karpov who had won it from Bobby Fischer by forfiet. Karpov was a member of the USSR machine. He won two matches against Korchnoi who had to play one match knowing his son was in a Soviet prison and beaten. This is probably the only blemish on an otherwise great career. Kasparov was more outspoken and was not just a part of the USSR machine. He is a good sportsman too and I think that if he knew the conditions Korchinov was playing under I think he would have refused to play the match until Korchinov's son was released. He is just that type of person and he has spent much time in the USA working on making chess more popular in the USA. Truly a great ambassador for chess.

Another football one:

I was the QB of the Texas National Championship of 1963. I surprised a lot of people in the Cotton when I threw two long td passes against Navy who had Roger Stauback then and broke open the game that we won 28 to 6. I also scored the winning td against the Aggies by a QB sneak late in the game and we won 15 to 13. We had a big scare against Baylor though. We had a td lead but late in the game the Baylor QB threw what first looked like a sure td pass but I was able to jump in front of the receiver and intercept the pass sealing the win for us. Since we are on QBs let's see if you know this one.

I was a QB that won the Heisman Trophy winner but started off wrong in Dallas. We lost two games there. One was to SMU which probably cost us the No. 1 Ranking and another was to Texas when we got blown out for the National Championship in the cotton bowl. I later returned to Dallas and played for the Cowboys and we got to play in five super bowls and won 2 of them. Who would have thought that such a shaky start would just be the start of great success in Dallas? Who am I?

A WNBA question:

I have been called the female Michael Jordon. I played on three straight national champions. Then to the joy of my opponents my college career ended and I packed my bags and headed for the desert. In Phonix I had pro success and made rookie of the year and got to play on the 2004 gold metal women's olymphics basketball team. Who am I?

This was Texas A&M University in case anyone is confused:D. Bear Bryant is not the answer. Remember this was in 1939. Bear Bryant coached at Texas A&M University 1954 to 1957. Good try though.

Another college coach question:

I coached at Texas. I came twice down to the final game of coaching Texas to a national championship. Once a cotton bowl loss to Notre Dame stopped us and the other a one point loss to Georgia did us in thanks mainly to a blocked punt in the fourth quarter. Who am I?

ehhh ill go ahead and ask one...

As a 19 year old freshman in college... i led my University to the NCAA championship... the following year.. we met the same team we beat the for the title, in the regional finals... i made a 75 foot pass with a basketball and my teammate hit the shot with less than 2 seconds remaining... it is the one play that brings a cringe to the other teams fans...... who am I
