Angelo State University athletic director Kathleen Brasfield didn't commit to a date to find a new football coach, but after interviewing Southeastern Oklahoma head coach Keith Baxter, she didn't rule out making a decision by early next week.

''We're still in talks with coach Baxter,'' Brasfield said. ''We'll have to wait and see how that turns out. (Having a decision by early next week) would be great but it's one of those goals I don't know how realistic it is.

''We want to get it settled as quickly as possible. If it were to happen early next week I'd be happy. Whether it does or not, we'll have to wait and see.''

Brasfield said a timeframe hasn't been nailed down on bringing in more applicants and said she'd probably talk with more candidates Sunday.

Baxter will be in Florence, Ala., this weekend for the presentation of the Harlon Hill Trophy and was unavailable for comment. Southeastern Oklahoma quarterback Drew Beard is one of three finalists for Division II's player of the year award.

''He's got great qualities,'' Brasfield said of the LSC North coach of the year for 2004. ''We know what kind of coach he is and everything about his program. He puts a strong emphasis on academics, he's a Division II guy, he knows about our league.

''He's a good man with great character. He keeps the big picture in mind: He's not going to sacrifice integrity for wins.''

Angelo State already hired one coach away from Southeastern in softball coach Travis Scott, and Brasfield took Baxter by the softball field Tuesday so he could say hello to his friend.
