AD wasn't the best player in the nation, he was merely one of the two best players on one of the two best teams. The definition of the Heisman has evolved a whole lot, but it should still go to the best player period. It's an easy formula to me... look at every player on every team and then decide which team would've been knocked down the most by the loss of that one player. USC would've still been a hell of a team without Leinart and still could very well be ranked number one. Same with Bush, same with AD (Oklahoma was being discussed as one of the best teams of all time last year before Peterson was even enrolled), and the same with White.

Smith, on the other hand, is a different story. That guy single-handedly put Utah in National Championship discussions. Remember, the last game that he was a second-teamer was last year's game against Texas A&M. The Utes were demolished. Smith got put in the very next game after Lance Rice went down with an injury. They've been cruising ever since.
