Tatum - 23, Wilmer-Hutchins - 19

TYLER – Wilmer-Hutchins gave a valiant effort, but fell to Tatum, 23-19, in a Class 3A Division II Region II semifinal Friday at Rose Stadium.

Tatum (12-1) will face the winner of today’s Madison-Gilmer game in the Region II final next week.

Wilmer-Hutchins (10-2) overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to take a brief lead late in the third quarter, but Wilmer-Hutchins’ offense couldn’t capitalize until it showed life on its final drive. Wilmer-Hutchins began at its own 10 with 1:36 remaining and quarterback Dustin Long completed four consecutive passes to take it to the Tatum 36. Wilmer-Hutchins, No. 2 in SportsDay’s Class 3A-and-others rankings and No. 10 in the Associated Press’ 3A state poll, advanced to the Tatum 27, but Long’s fourth-down desperation heave with no time remaining fell incomplete.

Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter as both defenses stiffened. Wilmer-Hutchins and Tatum twice penetrated each other’ 35-yard line in the fourth quarter, but came away empty.

The winning touchdown came on an eight-play, 56-yard drive culminated by Lennon Creer’s 3-yard touchdown run with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Creer’s score thwarted Wilmer-Hutchins, which seemed poised to take over the game after it scored two touchdowns in a span of 1:04 to take the lead. After running back Vern Cannon trimmed the lead to 16-13 on a 17-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, Wilmer-Hutchins cornerback Anthony Webb returned an interception 55 yards to the Tatum 9. Bell found Brandon Rhodes with a 5-yard touchdown pass for a 19-16 lead.

Four first-half turnovers, nine penalties and Tatum quarterback Stephen Hodge hampered Wilmer-Hutchins. Hodge’s play-making ability led to Tatum’s first two touchdowns. Tatum took its first lead when Hodge eluded numerous defenders and found Daylon McCoy for a 42-yard touchdown pass for a 9-6 lead with 2:08 remaining in the first half. He extended the lead to 16-6 thanks to a 50-yard run on the second play of the third quarter that set up his 17-yard touchdown run.

The turnovers gave Tatum excellent field position. Tatum started at its own 41 and 47 after Wilmer-Hutchins interceptions, but Wilmer-Hutchins’ defense was able to keep Tatum from scoring on those drives.
