Game is at 7:30 Friday in Round Rock according to the principal.

Talked to the coach who scouted Palestine last week. He said that they were one of the best 3A teams he had ever seen. Period. It doesn't get any easier.

palestine has looked very impressive in the playoffs so far and they had me worried for a while until cuero shocked the state of texas by winning 31-0... so as long as the gobblers stay fired up and go crazy they should come out on top

Cuero should win this game by one td. Palestine is going to give them a game, but the Gobblers are playing extremely tough. That being said, so is Palestine. It will be close, and, whoever wins has to be the favorite to win State.

Have you ever heard the sayin Defense wins championships....I don't think Palestine will hold up to their average pts next friday night! And look what the Cuero D did to Sinton, who was averaging like 50+ points a game in the first two rounds...Not to take anything away from the Pirates, nothing seemed to go their way last night. I think Cuero's D shows up again and the gobblers prevail.
Good luck Gobblers!

what type of offense does Palestine run?

bigpimpin
11-27-2004, 12:23 PM
Cuero's D forced turnovers at critical times and sucked the air right out of Sinton. What was it, 3 forced fumbles in the red zone? The biggest screw-up I saw was why play the starters when you're up 31-0? Reeve's bad about that even in games that aren't big. I was just waiting for one of those 2-way starters to go down cuz they were in the game with a minute left...

once again quite a few are jumping on the bandwagon of the team opposite the gobblers...notice this happens every game except maybe edna? that is very annoying and all it does is gets cuero ready to play even more so keep it up

Sweet! I have a rep. I am definately not going to get on here and start talking trash. I respect the tradition and history of Cuero football. You have a great program. And I think that against most 3A schools that is an advantage, here come the Cuero Gobblers, lets run and hide. Only problem with that this week is the kids from Palestine have no idea who you guys are (I have a feeling, win or lose, they will after this Friday). They just dropped down from 4A and they keep running into these 3A powerhouses and don't understand they aren't SUPPOSE to win. And keep in mind this defense chased around Adrian Peterson in practice, so they aren't intimidated by much. The offense has broken the school record for points scored in a season set last year. Last year it was all AD, all the time. This year they are spreading it out. Running it, throwing it. Its quite fun to watch.
I am really looking forward to the game on Friday. Good luck. Just don't hate me if I hope you come up a little short.

By the way, if any of you want to meet me, I will be on the Palestine sidelines with a video camera and/or still camera. (Tall guy with gotee) I am helping a friend of mine video for the PHS Season Highlight DVD. I would love to meet some of you guys.

Palestine is a big whole heavy-duty drop down solid 4A type team. Anyone that can play the schedule that they have played are going to be the winners. I just don't think that this is Region IVs year. Palestine gets no respect just like Silsbee because they are drop downs. I say if Palestine can take out that undefeated Silsbee team they will win by 3 TDs over any Region IV team this year. It's a matter that they have paid their dues playing a much superior schedule this season.

Yea, Cuero played a bunch of no good teams in the pre-season NOT and let's see..... Everyone who has seen Palenstine (or a good team they stomped play) is picking Palenstine. Everyone who has seen Cuero (or a good team they stomped play) is picking Cuero. This is the same region that produced Burnet the last couple of years. Palenstine is no shoe-in just because they are from "the faster, more athletic" east texas area. This is going to be a good game. I have no clue how it will turn out, but I saw Silsbee and Huffman and Palenstine stomped them both. Palenstine is dern good.

This is going to be a good game. I have no clue how it will turn out, but I saw Silsbee and Huffman and Palenstine stomped them both. Palenstine is dern good.

they said that greenwood couldnt keep up with all the speed daingerfield had but i guess we did. So just cause u got speed dont mean ur good. Another thing u could have a bunch of talented players with no heart and a team that has a lot of heart and character and i would take the team with heart any day over the talent.

Palestine will be ready for Cuero, in my opinion... But I guess we will all just have to wait until Friday, this is going to be one long week! I know this will be a hard fought game but I really think Palestine will win this one and go on to state this year! They have the talent, speed, heart, and team work... Cuero probably has all that too- but I am just going to be biased like most people and put all my faith in my guys! I know ya'll can do it! Lets Go Cats!:)

And if the Wildcats can make it past the Gobblers into the State Championship Game, he may not be there either because I think that is the night they hand out the Heisman Trophy (although I am not 100% sure).

The reason the smoaky.com-ers don't think Cuero stands a chance is because it is a regional website and they don't know anything about the Gobblers. That is why I have been on here a whole lot more lately because I knew that there are a whole lot of Cuero and Sinton fans, and I knew that is who we would be playing. Palestine's linebackers - the quarterbacks of the defense

12-1-04
By Scott Tyler
H-P Sports Editor

The Palestine five-man linebacking corps are the quarterbacks of a Wildcat defense which has held opponents to less than two touchdowns a game during Palestine's playoff run.

"Most defenses are based around great linebackers," Palestine defensive coordinator Booker Bowie said. "They have done a tremendous job in the playoffs, helping on the run, putting pressure on the quarterback and being able to cover on the pass."

The talented Palestine linebackers include Gerald Singleton Jr. and Lucky Henry on the outside and Ronald Brown, Jeremy Hawkins and Ben Beckworth at the inside linebacker positions.

"They have done a great job reading their keys, adjusting to formations and executing their assignments," Bowie said.

The Palestine linebackers have helped the Wildcats hold its playoff opponents to a total of 160 rushing yards, an average of 53 rushing yards a game.

Palestine will have another test Friday night when the Wildcats will play Cuero in the Class 3A, Division I semifinal playoff game at Round Rock ISD Stadium.

"Since playing in middle school, we have been talking about getting this far in the playoffs," Singleton said.

Coming into the season, Palestine head coach Glen Tunstall believed Palestine's linebackers would be one of the stronger parts of the team.

"Ronald and Jeremy both played a lot last year and Lucky came on late to earn a starting job," Tunstall said. "So I had high hopes and ambitions with those three coming back."

With three starters returning from last year's team, Palestine came into two-a-day practices in August adding Singleton, who transferred from Jacksonville after being a first-team all district player as a junior.

The final addition was Beckworth, a sophomore, who impressed the coaches enough in August to earn a starting spot.

"I saw he had a nose for the football and he enjoyed playing the game," Bowie said of his decision to move Beckworth to a starting varsity spot. "He was a hard hitter I saw he had great feet."

Singleton and Henry are Palestine's monster and nickel linebackers as they come off the edges.

"Gerald and Lucky have great speed and cause havoc on each play," Tunstall said.

Singleton leads the team with 9.5 sacks and has 59 tackles on the season. In the regional playoff win over Huffman-Hargrave, Singleton had an interception when he read the wide receiver screen and then while coming off the edge, snagged the ball out of the air.

"Gerald is the type of kid with his height and athletic ability, he is a big threat," Bowie said. "He is a relentless pass rusher and his size is an advantage."

Henry has come on strong for Palestine as the season has progressed. He is second on the team with six sacks and fourth on the team with 70 tackles. In the win over Huffman, he had 1.5 sacks and in Palestine's quarterfinal playoff win over Waco-Connally, he was tied with the team-high nine tackles.

"When you look at Lucky, you wonder if he is on the JV or varsity team, but he plays with such a big heart," Bowie said. "He is a relentless pursuer who reads his keys and he is always in the right position to make big plays."

Brown has become one of the leaders on the Palestine defense as he leads the team with 158 tackles, including 101 solo tackles. He also has three sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Brown had 12 tackles in the win over Huffman, including a sack, and then nine tackles against Connally.

"Ronald is the kind of player who you can build a defense around," Bowie said. "He has the strength and size to play inside and the speed to cover fast backs."

Jeremy Hawkins started the season on the defensive line, but before the start of district, he was moved to the middle inside linebacker slot, which helped turn around a struggling defense.

Hawkins has 57 tackles on the season and 2.5 sacks.

"Jeremy is more of a plugger who is great from tackle-to-tackle," Bowie said. "He is a great linebacker who fills well inside on running plays."

Hawkins broke his hand in the first half of Palestine's first playoff game against Silsbee, but he stayed in the game.

"That just shows the type of competitor he is and how much he wants to loves the game," Bowie said of Hawkins playing with the broken hand.

Beckworth has stepped into a varsity starting spot as a sophomore and has shined.

"It has been a privilege playing with this class and I new I was going to have to step up my play to play with these guys," Beckworth said.

The Palestine sophomore is second on the team with 90 tackles, including 11 against Huffman.

"Ben is one of those you do not see come through to often as a sophomore," Bowie said. "He is handling it well as a sophomore and there are not too many you can ask to do it."

Beckworth has played multiple positions on the Palestine defense, including being a defensive back when opponent's use a three or four wide receiver set.

"Ben is a smart football player and he deserves a big pat of the back for his character," Tunstall said. "We have asked a 15-year-old young man to do more than professional athletes do."

Palestine's defense had its struggles earlier in the season against the run, but since the beginning of district play, the Wildcats have been solid with its run defense.

"First we were just a bunch of head busters, but we became a wrecking crew," Brown said. "Everybody on defense had to trust each other to do their individual tasks for the good of the team."

The Palestine linebackers agree it is teamwork that has gotten them to the state semifinal playoff game.

"We came together as a team," Henry said. "We had to put it in our minds that we wanted it and then we had to work for it.

"None of us worry about stats, we just do what it takes to win."

Good luck Gobblers!
You can't compare what Cuero did against Sinton to what will happen Friday. There will be completely different matchups and that's what it's all about. I don't think Cuero will match up near as well with Palestine as they have with any other opponent. Cuero is big, but so is Palestine along with a TON of speed. I think the speed factor will be the difference just like it was against Newton in 98.

I might be wrong.. (Lord know's it won't be the first time) but if we did.. we beat them cause we lost to Aledo in the State Game - isn't that terrible, I can't remember who we played...... All the games and years begin to blend together after a while. must be that age thing lol

Hmmm... I could be wrong too, but I could've swore that Cuero and Newton played in 98. If Cuero lost in the finals then I must be wrong because Newton won the DII state title and they would've had to play in the semi's.

Aledo 14 - Cuero 7

Honestly, had we won that game, Palestine would've sent us packing in the next round. We were not very strong on the defensive front this year and could not stop the run. You can't win a title and be weak in your front 7. We knew this group was going to be a little weak, but we thought the drop to 3A might help... it didn't. We'll be stronger and MUCH better next year. Maybe we can hook up then.:)

Say all you want about Palestine's speed, I'm impressed that Cuero has made it this far without their top 2 runningbacks. They have a fullback and a sophomore carrying the load out of the backfield.

if coop was playin he would of broke 2000 yards by now. we'd kill teams but we are still doin good with what we have. the bad thing is our players are still cold blooded without them and noone can contain them.

I think the speed factor will be the difference just like it was against Newton in 98.
.
Sinton IMHO had nice speed to play with just about any team in 3A Texas. Cuero is a good team. Speed is good but it isn't the only ingredient.;)
Wimberley had great size and speed. They were tough! They were extremely well coached and disciplined.
I do think the Gobblers won't be worn down like some think they will.;)

Plus, I also read somewhere where the Cuero D is actually rated higher than Palestine's, but not taking anything away from that, since ratings are useless when emotions are high, like others have said, the team with the fewest mistakes should win the ballgame. Good luck to both teams!

But we're not slow, that's for sure... 4.4 MLB doesn't hurt at all... neither does a fast secondary (young, yes, but pretty fast)...

Is this gunna be like Wharton/Cuero? Show up to a ball game and leave after seeing a trackmeet?
