Royse City - 35 Center - 8
TYLER – Although Royse City finished 5-5 last season, coach Rodney Webb let his team set a lofty goal: a state championship.

Royse City is two wins away from achieving that goal after defeating Center, 35-8, in a Class 3A Division I Region II final at Rose Stadium on Friday.

Royse City (11-2) will face the winner of Friday’s Abilene Wylie-Decatur game in a state semifinal next week.

The victory marked the furthest Royse City has advanced in the UIL playoffs. The last time Royse City went this deep in the postseason was when it reached the state quarterfinals in 1998.

“I can’t say I expected to be in the state semifinals in my second year,” said Webb, a former assistant at Garland Naaman Forest. “But we felt like we needed to be in the playoffs this year.”

Center (8-5) had the unenviable task of trying to slow down the No. 1 offense among Class 3A area teams. Center couldn’t as Royse City’s offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage. Royse City, which averages 454 yards per game, rushed for 381 yards led by quarterback James Mapps and running back Cameron Holliness. Mapps, who gained only 20 yards on his first seven carries, had 123 yards at halftime and Holliness had 137. Mapps finished with 167 yards and two touchdowns and Holliness finished with a game-high 197 yards and three touchdowns.

“I knew from the very first play we could dominate,” Holliness said. “I give all credit to my offensive line. They make holes for me and James and we run through them.”
Center’s hope was to make Friday’s game a shootout and take advantage of a suspect Royse City defense, which surrenders an average of 22.8 points per game. But Center’s offense struggled to get on track thanks to Royse City’s aggressiveness. Center didn’t record a first down until six minutes remained in the second quarter and crossed midfield once in the first half.

Royse City’s defense has responded in the postseason. It allowed only 14 points in last week’s playoff win over Kaufman and has allowed an average of 14 points in three playoff games.
