Thanks Micotrav from www.texasprepxtra.com for this...

----------------------------------------------------

It all started in 1930, first district championship. From there it just kept rolling. 38 playoff appearances. Three district championships in the 1930's. Of interest in the 30's the Bulldogs would play a Dallas area champion every year on January 1. It was known as "The Onion Bowl". Five district championships in the 1940's. One year they did not play, it was World War II and several of the high school boys joined the service. Also interesting was that the coach was drafted into the Army one year and the owner of the hardware store took over the team, he won three consecutive district championships. During these times, opponents were Rockwall,Grand Prairie,Segoville, Carrollton,Hillcrest, Forney, Pleasant Grove, Plano, Greenville, Allen, Garland, Sulphur Springs, Terrell, Dallas Sunset,Wylie, Mesquite, etc. you get what I'm saying. 1950's were probably the best years except for maybe 1998 and we will see how this season measures up. In the 1950's held the longest win streak, 33 consecutive games without a loss. Began in 1953 and went thru 1958. During those times there were a few losses here and there, three to be exact and one tie. For seven years the Bulldogs only lost three games and had one tie. Those three losses were to Shelbyville, Mesquite and Rockwall. The tie was against Van. In 1956, the Bulldogs scored 605 points in the season. They beat Bells 98-0 and two weeks later beat Princeton 95-0. They only had 13 points scored against them all year, 7 from Rockwall and 6 from Lockett. That same year they scrimmaged Garland at the beginning of the year. The Garland coach was Homer B. Johnson, you may have heard that name. The scrimmage was held early in the afternoon, at the end of the scrimmage Garland was still behind so Johnson wanted to play more. They played until dark and Royse City still led. That year Garland won their first State Championship. This can be verified by Mr. Johnson, he is still the AD at Garland. Those years produced players that went on to play for the University of Texas, Vanderbilt,TCU, SMU, Arizona University, Texas A&M under Bear Bryant. Also the Minnesota Vikings. Royse City's Arthur Pollard was the punter for Texas Tech and went on to race cars in the Indy 500, he was killed in that same race. Not about high school football, but an interesting side note. In the 1960's they won 4 more district championships. In 1962 their only loss was to Rockwall by a score of 8-0, Rockwall won the state championship in 2A that year. RC played Frisco and Everman in the playoffs. The highest classfication back then was 4A. 1966 and 1967 back to back champions. Played Aledo and Masonic Homes in the playoffs. 1970's were dry, but good years. Remember you had to win the district to advance back then. If you went 9-1, lost to the district champ, you sit home. No second place playoffs, much less third place. During the 70's they had a 8-2 and a 7-3 and some other winning seasons, close but no cigar. Then came the 1980's Back to back to back championships. Bo Smith and Stick Robinson years, better known in North Texas as the Bo and Stick Show. Two of the most impressive running backs you have ever seen. Stick went on to be named as an All-American in college. Was drafted by the Washington Redskins and unfortunately passed away from leukemia about a year after he graduated. He was 26 years old. Playoff opponents in those years, Eustace, Howe and Celina. G.A. Moore's Celina team pulled out a 42-36 win in what could have been a state championship run for the Bulldogs. 1990's came along, early 90's still had to win the district championship to advance. Coach Carroll's teams were second and third early. 1994 Royse City begins to build steam, knocks off Commerce, the number 4 ranked team in the state and only the Bulldogs second year in 3A. 1997 Bulldogs knock off a very good Kennedale team to win the championship and face undefeated Eustace in a quadruple overtime playoff game. 1998 Bulldogs are the only team to defeat Commerce in district play in the 1990's. The 27-14 win gave the Bulldogs the district championship. Knocked off Bridgeport Bull team that was probably the most talented team they have every had, three first team all-state players. Bulldogs then knock off Crandall in a 38-35 shootout at Allen's Stadium, the next week the Bulldogs traveled to Nacogdoches and played Tatum for the Regional Semi-finals. Tatum had lost the state championship the year before, but came back loaded. Royse City took a 32-0 halftime lead and the Eagles declared the Bulldogs as the best high school team they have ever played. The Bulldogs nearly gave it away though as the final score was 38-32. The next week they played Daingerfield at Mesquite Memorial. A stadium that holds 20,000, was nearly full for the only Metroplex team still alive in the state playoffs. Daingerfield leading 17-16, the RC coach lets the Tigers score intentionally. The Bulldogs stepped out of the way and let the RB go in to score. With less than 2 minutes RC wanted the ball back and needed to drive the field to tie the game and send it into overtime. Daingerfield leading 24-16 held the Bulldogs as the time ran out with the Bulldogs in scoring position. 1999, Royse City returns the entire first offensive team and are ranked the number one team in the state. The Bulldogs go 9-1 with thier only loss to Commerce. Remember this is right in the middle of the Commerce string of state championship years. The Bulldogs lose their quarterback to a broken collarbone. They still knock off state rank Bridgeport in the first round, but a surprising Alvarado team catches the Bulldogs looking ahead and stops the Bulldogs in the area round. Six years later the Bulldogs go undefeated in district play. Play a great Gainesville team and win. One of the highlights of the year. Outscore a good Mt. Vernon team 70-60 for the second highest scoring high school football contest in Texas HS history. 2004 has produced two phenomenal runners in Cameron Holliness, a junior and James Mapps a senior. Mapps has nearly 2200 yards rushing, Holliness has over 1600 yards. Mapps has 30 touchdowns and Holliness has 21. The team has 4600 yards for 2004. They knocked off #7 ranked Kennedale in week one and pounded a good 9-2 Kaufman team 37-14. This year we have players being recruited by UTEP, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech, just to name the big schools.

I don't know who that guy was, but he better take another look at Royse City. They've got one of the best, if not THE best, ground attack in 3A.

I wouldn't use the word funny but it is a bit of a surprise. The RC I know didn't have success is the early '90's as the story indicates. You could take just about any Texas town and give the rundown of the past and it would probably look the same.

I hope RC can bring a state championship home so that they can add another chapter to this story.
