Sinton has been hit with the injury bug a little. No excuse cause the team is fairly deep IMHO.

"It is kind of hard to beat the same team twice," Ross admitted. "But we know that if you lose this game, you're out. That's why we're trying hard to pick it up."

The No. 1 Gobblers (12-0) look for history to repeat itself when they meet No. 6 Sinton (10-2) in a Class 3A, Division I quarterfinal game today at 8 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Cuero and Sinton played earlier this season in a non-district game at Gobbler Stadium won by Cuero 35-28.

"There is a sense of familiarity so it's more like a district game," said Cuero coach Mark Reeve. "They know you better and you know them better."

Reeve is no stranger rematches in the postseason. He was the head coach at Victoria High in 1993 when the Stingarees defeated Alice 20-19 in district play and beat the Coyotes 35-21 in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

"I think we've got an idea of what they're going to do," Reeve said. "We've worked on some different stuff. Everybody's got their tendencies, including us. But we don't get all caught up in sets and motions. We concentrate on lining up and doing the things we're going to do."

Larvell Roy rushed for 131 yards and one touchdown, and Matt Schumacher passed for 191 yards and three touchdowns as the Gobblers rolled up 461 yards of offense in their previous win over Sinton.

But Sinton running back Travis Franco rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and caught four passes for 81 yards, and quarterback Daniel Ramirez ran for a touchdown and passed for another in the fourth quarter to turn a potential rout into a close game.

"We could have played better," said Ross, who caught four passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns against Sinton. "We played just well enough to win. We have to stay excited the whole game."

Cuero has had very few blowouts this season and the postseason has been no exception. The Gobblers used a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Schumacher to Ross to secure a 21-7 bi-district win over Columbia, and two late defensive stands to preserve a 21-17 regional victory over Wimberley.

"We've been in 10 really tough, close games," Reeve said. "But the good thing about this team is it's never too high or never too low. The kids have maintained a steady keel. That's how they play. They have the ability to turn it up when things aren't looking good. They pull on that inner strength."

Sinton has been a virtual offensive machine. With the exception of a 31-7 loss to Gregory-Portland, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, the 28 points the Pirates scored against Cuero was the least they've scored this season.

"They've scored 500-something points (508) and that's pretty impressive," Reeve said of the Pirates, who defeated Crystal City 61-12 in bi-district before running away with a 43-6 regional win over Zapata. "They're just real, real solid. They don't have a lot of flaws."

Cuero has scored 401 points and yielded 158 points, and has been involved in four games decided by one touchdown or less.

"We've played a lot of playoff teams and those things work in your favor," Reeve said. "We've been playing for our lives every single week and this week's not going to be any different."

The difference this week is the Gobblers are attempting to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1998.

"We came together real well last week," Ross said. "We're playing hard and trying to win. We know this is the last chance for the seniors. We're doing what we have to do to win."

NOTES: For the first time in the playoffs this season, Cuero will be the visiting team and wear its white jerseys...Cuero makes its first appearance in the Alamodome since defeating Giddings 13-10 in the 1998 Division I semifinals...The Cuero-Sinton winner will play the winner of tonight's Waco Connally-Palestine game in the semifinals...The Cuero-Sinton game will be broadcast on KZAM, 104.7 FM & KGUL, 96.1 FM.
