View Full Version : Why College Women's Soccer is great - mainly to 66 and PPHS! :)

This would also apply to men's soccer but I am not a fan of men's soccer. One of the UT Lady Soccer players said the problem with many people is that they don't understand it. Of course with understanding comes revelation! :) There is a strong competitive in soccer like most sports but with soccer there is so much left up to your team and the way you perform. It is not everyday that your're guaranteed to go out there and win. In soccer there are not different teams like on offense, defense, special teams etc. but in soccer nearly everyone except maybe the goalie (in most cases) has to be able to play both ends of the field. That is what makes it great.
Upsets (?) are most likely to happen in soccer especially if your goalie has a great game. That is what makes it great. Kansas had a great team and actually is much better than Nebraska. Kansas won the regular season big 12 championship along with the Lady Aggies and then made the semis in the tournament. Yet in the playoffs Nebraska eliminated Kansas and made sweet 16. That is the beauty of it. You never know what will happen and all the players can do is do their best. That makes it a great sport. Big 12 tournament in San Antonio next year 66 and PPHS? :)

Last year in Austin the Lady Horns and Lady Aggies played a great game in Austin. I wish I had been there but fortunately it was televised. The Lady Horns had outshot and outplayed the Lady Aggies but with about 25 minutes left in the second half the Lady Aggies got off a freak shot that hit the crossbar on the side and went in for the point and it looked like they were going to win. But Texas tied it up with 36 seconds left on a kick in! The game went into overtime in which the team that scores first wins and there are two minute overtimes. They don't have penalty kicks in college regular season games. It went into the second overtime and looked like it might end in a tie when Texas kicked a ball in with less than 2 minutes to play and the ball just happened to hit a Lady Aggies hand in the A&M box. This resulted in a penalty kick that the Texas Lady Horns made to win the game. A thrilling game. I just wish that 66, PPHS, and me could have been there. :)

The thing is that it is so competitive that one good player transferring in to a school can change that school from a fair team to a great team. And games can be close. In soccer many many games are decided by one point and sometimes that in overtime. It is not unusually to see a lot of 1 - 0, 2 - 1, or 3 - 2 games. And as I have said one isn't always convinced that the winner is really the best team. It makes it so interesting.

Man the one they played Sunday in the NCAA playoffs between Texas and West Virginia was a barn burner 66 and PPHS. Texas was ahead 2 to 1 but in the last few seconds West Virginia almost sent the game into overtime. As the time ticked away WV got off a kick that almost made it but it hit the top bar and bounced back into the field. A WV player kicked it into the net for a point but it didn't count because time had expired. A thrilling game indeed!

The final 8 start playing tomorrow.

Tomorrow it will be Portland vs Notre Dame and Washington vs Princeton. Of course we will all be at football games. On Saturday it will be Illinois vs Santa Clara and UCLA vs Ohio State.

The winners will meet in the final four shootout next weekend.

In women's college soccer the two teams play two 45 minute halves. Then there are two overtime periods of ten minutes each and the first team that scores in either overtime wins. If it is still tied at the end of the two overtime periods then if it is the regular season it is a tie. If it is a playoff then the penalty kicks are used to decide the winner.

The pretty thing about women's college soccer is that you can look at the final 8 teams and pick the one team that you feel doesn't have a chance to win the national champion and that team may very well be the one that wins it all! It makes soccer so great!

Things can happen so suddenly in soccer that makes it so exciting and thrilling. Last year in the NCAA Women's soccer national championship Notre Dame was ahead 1 to 0 ahead of UCLA and it looked like they would win but one of the Notre Dame defenders intended to pass a ball to the goalie but they miscommunicatede and the ball went into their goal thus having what is called own goal and gave UCLA the tie. The game went into overtime twice so it came down to penalty kicks and Notre Dame won the National Championship on penalty kicks 4 to 2 in a thrilling game indeed.

What makes the game (women's soccer) so exciting is that you never know what will happen even to the best teams. The University of North Carolina had been dominate in the sport so long but now it is parity which is great for the sport. But in 2003 UNC dominated it again easily winning the National championship game with their awesome team. Just when you thought that soccer was going to be boring again the next year with basically the same awesome team Notre Dame got beat by Santa Clara in the playoffs by one goal and thus the awesome team didn't get to even make the final four much less be national champions. It makes women's soccer great.

Please bear in mind that what I say about the Women's soccer can be applied to all soccer but it is women's soccer in college that I really like. I very rarely watch men's soccer unless it is a big game.

In the Big 12 playoffs last year it was completely demonstrated by what I say when I say soccer is so unpredictable and you never know what will happen. Kansas was ahead of Texas by 2 goals and their goalie played a magnificient game keeping Texas from scoring. Kansas was a great defensive team and had not allowed more than one goal a game and had many shutouts. There was about 20 minutes left in the game and with their great defense it is like a team being 14 points behind a great defensive team in football with five minutes left. But with 20 minutes to go the improbable happened which goes to show how things can change so sudden in women's soccer. UT got a goal but it was because the Kansas goalie had the ball caught but one of her own defenders collided with her causing her to drop the ball that UT's Ashley Foster turned into a goal to make the lead 2 to 1. Then late in the game a foul near the Kansas goal gave Texas a penalty kick which UT used to tie the game and send it into overtime. The thing is that the foul was probably not necessary and the Kansas defenders probably could have kept them from scoring but that is soccer and that is part of the beauty of it. It looked like the game would come down to panalty kicks but in the last two minutes one of the Texas forwards got a big break and moved down the field and put the ball in the goal thus giving UT a big win. Improbable indeed but that is soccer. You never know!
