District 3-3A has turned into the wackiest race of them all with three teams - Greenwood, Fort Stockton and Seminole - tied at 3-1 in district play heading into the final week. And Monahans, which plays at Greenwood on Friday, is 2-2 and could get in with a victory over the Rangers.
Here is when it all went wacky. Fort Stockton could have clinched a share of the district title last Friday but lost 34-27 to Seminole, which has reeled of consecutive surprising victories to get into this race. The week before, Seminole rolled past Monahans 44-26. Monahans stayed alive in this race by beating struggling Pecos last Friday, 47-0.
Greenwood appears to be on a roll as the Rangers got their first victory in Lamesa since 1991 with a 34-0 thrashing of the Golden Tornadoes.
The Rangers, however, also appear to have the toughest test this Friday when they host the Loboes. Fort Stockton is expected to win at Pecos and Seminole will likely be the favorite when the Indians host Lamesa.
If all three frontrunners win, then they share the district title. If Monahans beats Greenwood and Lamesa beats Seminole, then it could throw a big monkey wrench into the playoff picture, forcing the district into all kinds of tiebreaking scenarios.
