In a game that could have been played on ESPN2, the Burges Mustangs stayed alive in the playoffs by defeating the Austin Panthers 87-56.

They say that in a shootout the one with more ammunition wins. That was certainly that case for the Mustangs.

But it was the Burges defense that tipped the scale in the Mustangs' favor late in the third quarter.

The Mustang secondary picked off Panther quarterback Eddie Diaz three times while the defensive line forced three fumbles.

And that was the big difference in the game, considering that the Mustangs racked up 642 total offensive yards while Austin finished with 617.

Jonathan Simpson, a back-up running back who became a starter for this game, led the Mustang with 21 carries for 311 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Mustang quarterback John Skelton threw for 253 yards

was there some agreement between the coaches prior to the game to only play 7 men on defense and 14 on offense or what.
