I'm trying to find out for you Keith. My hunch is that a Lyford punt went bad, either bad snap, or over punter's head, and they gave up the safety that way.

La Feria has a tremendous defense, they held Port Isabel's offense in check for the most part until the 4th Quarter when PI finally pulled away.

IF La Feria gets into the Div. 2 playoffs, WATCH OUT! They'll be tough to beat.

IF Hidalgo beats Lyford next week, Hidalgo is in the playoffs and in Div. 1, putting La Feria in Div. 2 along with Port Isabel.

Lions beat up Bulldogs

Lyford’s Omar Cavazos finds no room to run against the La Feria Lions during the third quarter.

LA FERIA — The wind giveth, and it taketh away…but usually the latter.

In the closing seconds here Friday, Lyford was driving for the game-winning score against La Feria. And then then the ill wind blowin’ no good decided the contest.

La Feria hung on for a 2-0 District 32-3A victory, after Justin Ramirez leaped in to intercept a pass that hung up in the breeze at his own 3-yard line with 57 seconds left.

Seldom has a game with two total points been so riveting. The two defenses were immovable objects, and the stiff pre-Halloween wind made it even trickier for either La Feria or Lyford to get on the board.

The lone score came in the third quarter when a Lyford punt snap from the 24 sailed over the head of punter Joey Rios and he was forced to track the ball down in the end zone and give it a swift kick across the end line, a la Ronaldo.

The play before, Rios had punted with the wind down to the La Feria 35, but the Bulldogs chose to re-kick after a 5-yard roughing call against Rios. Then disaster struck, and the game’s only points floated onto the scoreboard as the Lion fans went bananas.

La Feria is now 4-1 in district and 5-2 overall, while Lyford is 3-2, 6-3 after this serious defensive slugfest. The Lions clinch the No. 2 spot in the league, rebounding from a tough loss last week to Port Isabel.

Ramirez, who subbed for injured quarterback Mathew Garcia and contributed 71 rushing yards, was exhausted after the game, having played most of the 48-minute tilt.

"I had to step up and get that pick," said the junior, whose offense gained just 127 yards with six first downs.

"This was the last home game for a bunch of seniors, and I had to do something to close it out."

Lyford collected 199 yards, all on the ground, but failed to complete a pass, with two interceptions, both against the wind. Aaron Infante (97 yards on 16 carries) keyed the late Lyford march, which started at the Bulldog 20 and went to the Lion 12 before the final turnover, the team’s third.

The ‘Dogs ran 13 plays on the march and had a first down at the 12 after a personal foul penalty against La Feria. On second down, staring at a clinching field goal, Adrian Romo went back to pass, looking for Noel Garcia. Ramirez stepped in front of the sailing ball to win the game.

The defensive match featured the punishing linebacker corps of La Feria versus the massive, yet agile and quick front four of Lyford. Paul Castor of the Lions was his usual dominant self, and teammate Jose Morales had a 10-tackle night.

Both teams had several chances to score, but each drive ended in failure. Late in the third quarter the Bulldogs made it to the La Feria 29 but a fourth-and-11 pass to Garcia was just out of reach in the opening minutes of the fourth.

La Feria (4-1 in district) finishes next week at Raymondville (2-3), while the Bulldogs (3-2) must defeat Hidalgo at home to knock out the 2-3 Pirates (who nudged out Raymondville Friday) and make the postseason.

That Justin Ramirez(JR), is a great player, and play maker. Against PI, he came in at QB, after their starter went out on an injury. He was instrumental, in setting there two scores, actually he scored on a run TD and with a long pass, he set up the FG. And this week looks like he saved the game for La Feria, with that interception.

There is good parity in the district, most notable in recent years. So, it's making district 32-AAA a tough place to play in. Most of the teams are coming up with real good defenses, it's just the offenses need to catch up some, then they will really make this district one of the tougher ones in the state in 3a.

Yes, it would have, if you like defensive dominated games. I saw one similar for 3 Qtrs. last week against this same La Feria team. They have a college prospect player in Paul Castor, 3 year starter, who's played3 different positions, and was all-district in all 3.
