Lady Leopards End Season With Win Over Sanger

The Gainesville Lady Leopards might have saved their best for last.
The Lady Leopards shook off a slow start and defeated the Sanger Lady Indians 27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20 in their final match of the season.
Gainesville finished the season with a 12-22 record overall and 4-6 in district. They finished in fourth place in District 6-3A. Bowie placed first in district, while Whitesboro was second and Pilot Point was third. The top three teams make the playoffs.
Things didn’t start well for GHS as they fell behind 19-9 in the first game. But they didn’t quit, instead they roared back to get the win.
Laci Felderhoff got the rally started with a pair of good serves. Later, Kelsey Haverkamp served three straight points and Jessica Lopez and Leah Sanchez both added kills as the deficit shrank to 4 (20-16). The Lady Leopards got within 2 (22-20) after three points from Sharday Brown.
Sanger got within one point of winning the game (24-22), but the Lady Leopards got a crucial sideout. Amy Scott then had back-to-back kills to put GHS ahead 25-24. They eventually won the first game 27-25.
Game two was a roller coaster. Gainesville took an early lead after a kill by Brown and an ace by Haverkamp. Sanger came back to take a 9-5 lead. Later, Felderhoff served seven consecutive points as the Lady Leopards went ahead 16-11. During that rally, Haverkamp and Lopez both had kills and Brown had a block.
But Sanger used two runs to come from behind and eventually put the game away. They scored five straight points to tie things up at 16-16. Later, they used a 4-0 run to take a 23-18 lead. The Indians eventually won the second game 25-21.
The third game was the most important one of the match. This time, it was Sanger jumping out to an early 6-4 lead. Gainesville, thanks to a kill by Lopez and two kills by Sanchez, went ahead 8-6.
Things were tied up 10-10 when Whitney Caraway served five points. Brown and Haverkamp each had two kills during the run.
The teams traded sideouts for the next nine points. Down the stretch, Sanchez served three points and Scott had a kill and two tips as the Lady Leopards won 25-18.
With momentum on their side, the Lady Leopards jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fourth game. They were ahead 11-5, but Sanger stormed back to tie things at 11-11.
Gainesville took the lead at 13-12 thanks to a kill by Lopez. They never trailed after that. Scott, Haverkamp and Brown all recorded kills. With the Lady Leopards leading 24-20, the two teams had their longest rally of the night, but Sanchez ended the match with a kill.
Haverkamp, Scott and Brown led the way at the net. The trio of seniors were playing in their final match as a Lady Leopard. Lopez and Sanchez added several kills, while Felderhoff did a nice job setting and Caraway and Jacquelyn Smith each had several key digs on the back row.
