1. Commerce 01' - D2 State Champs

2. Gainesville 03' -D1 State Champs

3. Decatur 04' - D1 ?????

True, BullsFan...I thought about those, but I couldn't remember if it was the 93' or 94' SLC team we played. The 94' SLC team won 3A state, I think.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the highly-touted Sealy teams of the mid 90's.

1. Sealy in 1995
2. Sealy in 1997
3. Commerce in 1999

This is a tough topic to pick though, considering all of the bias in High School football. Just going with what I've seen here.

Newton has played several great teams

-- Cameron about '81 or '82
-- Sealy '95 or '96 (beat a good Newton 82-6)
-- Marlin last year

Also got to see Jasper play Willowridge in about '80 or '81
Willowridge had Thurman Thomas, they where great.

Any Jasper people remeber that.
I was only about 6, but it was one of those great childhood memories. They played in Pasadina, "Urban Cowboy" had just came out and my Dad took the family to Gilley's before the game.
He bought us matching black Stetson hats with a big turquoise feather. My dad drank the only beer I ever saw him drink, it was a Long Star, and he gave me the bottle. What a trip.

I am going out on a limb here..... I might be wrong, but didn't Cuero play SLC for the State Championship in Waco in Dec 1993?

Breckenridge '98 and '99...the years they had Watkins @ QB and Polley @ RB...still cant believe they didnt win state those two years.

Everman '02 - the beating that they put on Wylie wasn't even fair. For the score to only be 37-0 was lucky for Wylie because the Everman defense looked like a D1 college program playing a mediocore D3 offense...or we could just substitute in Baylor here!

Gainesville '03 - While I'm not a big fan of the offense they use with coach calling in plays after the defense is set...I still have to say this was the most athleticm team I have seen in any classification. The speed on this team was UNREAL for 3A...their D-line guys were consistently running down RB's and WR's...it was fun to watch!

I know its not 3A but I have to also include the '95 Austin Westlake team. I was still an Abilene Cooper kid cuz we didnt move to Wylie until '97 and watching Brees and company completely destroy Cooper @ Texas Stadium in the finals...it was definitely a mismatch!

Yes, that was a good story. Jasper actually played Willowridge and Thomas twice, first in 82 at Lamar Cardinal Stadium in Beaumont, and the game you saw in 83 at Pasadena. I was at that game, in the drizzling rain. :(

Jasper got whipped good in 82, but were more ready in 83, finally losing 6-10. At the time Willowridge was ranked 5th in the nation by USA. Then Bay City walloped them the next week on their way to winning state. You just never know what is going to happen in HS football!

He's a starter up there, but I think:thinking: he got injured (again). He's an awesome QB and probably the best player on that team... when he's in the game. But the injury bug bit him hard the past few years and he just can't seem to shake it.

Best teams in any classification I've seen personally...

1. Austin Westlake '00... High-powered offense lost to Midland Lee in the State Finals... featured Chad Shroeder at QB and an awesome WR who snagged everything within a three-mile radius... Midland Lee must've been awesome, they beat the Chaps by 12...

2. LaMarque '95 or '96... I forget which year, they all kinda run together, but it was the last year they played against Calallen in the Semis in the Astrodome... Fastest team I've ever seen regardless of classification and the best LaMarque team I saw in that little run of theirs through the mid-90's...

3. Lufkin '01... Reggie made that team go... They had so many athletes it made me sick... Might have made it to State without Reggie, but he was absolutely untouchable... One of those rare athletes that is just on a completely different level than any other player around him...

Best 3A teams....

1. Cuero '95... At least two future NFL'ers played on that team, maybe three (I've heard both... anybody from Cuero is welcome to enlighten the rest of us on the subject)... Eight players on that team went on to play college ball at some level... Clint Finley was an absolute God between the sidelines... He was a skill position player and was running over our linemen like it was nothing... The strongest back I've ever seen... Everybody on their line was at least the size of a Toyota... Simply dominating... Would've loved to see them play Sealy that year, but didn't have the funds to go...

2-4. Everman/Sinton/Forney '01... They were all on the same level, all were absolute powerhouses... I think that was a Golden Year for football at the 3A level... All three of those teams were a notch above any of the teams in the years leading up to then and the teams that followed... For anybody that saw Everman in 2002 and thought they were one of the best ever, you should've seen them the year before... Everman's defense was the fastest that Class 3A may have ever seen... One of their DB's actually ran down former Forney RB and current Sooner track star DaBryon Blanton from behind in their showdown at Pennington... Forney was a mirror image of Everman; tough D and smashmouth offense that they just dared you to stop them... Blanton was untouchable, even Everman couldn't stop him... If I remember correctly, it was a 17-14 game... Sinton was a different monster, but was a monster nonetheless... Perfectly balanced defense and a balanced offense where the QB and RBs complemented each other nicely... Had a 6'7" 300-pound DT allowing a stable of 4.6 LBs to run free through the hashes... Curt Jones was a top-notch pass-rusher and the secondary was anchored by All-State FS Chance Schmidt... DL averaged something like 6'3" 260 lbs... Only one member of the D-Line was relegated to Second-Team All-District, and that was because Ingleside had a 6'2" 225# senior that is playing at Texas State as we speak... Adrian Alaniz, only a junior, had already established himself as one of the State's premier signal-callers (had started on two other playoff teams in the two years leading up to his junior campaign) and had 4.5 speed to keep defenses from keying on his receivers... Oh, and he also had All-State tailback Marcus Charles and All-District running back Julian Ruiz to help him out, too...

I don't doubt it. Marcus was a blur. Put any one of those three teams in a time warp anywhere from about 1998 until present and they would be the favorite to win State. I've never seen that many loaded teams in 3A meet in the same year. I've heard 1995 was similar, but I never saw Commerce or Sealy.

I did get to see something similar in 2A, though. 2000 was a Golden Year down there. Celina and Mart each had 36+ game winning streaks going into the State Championship that year. Them, Refugio, Lone Oak, Sonora and Blanco were all absolute studs.

He went to Arizona after graduating but never got above 2nd on the depth chart and I THINK that he transferred back to Tarleton State for his final 2 years when they were one of the top D2 teams in the country.

Oh yeah, the defense didn't have a weak link, but the guy who made that defense a monster was Zack Peterson.

Your defense was built around those linebackers of yours and Schmidt. You had the speed to get anywhere on the field you wanted to go, and the linebackers really became more like wanderers that only played 3-5 yards off the ball. They could go anywhere they wanted because Peterson was always taking on two or three guys. He was so big and so stong and the only team who could afford to body up on him (and they still had to mix in a double team from time to time) was Everman. Your linebackers were AWESOME because of him. They didn't have to worry about downfield blockers, they could just make a b-line towards the ball and get there. If they would have had an average line, they still would have been great, but you look at that year and the '02 team the LB's were fighting to get to the ball a whole lot more in '02.

'91 Southlake Carroll Dragons (Reg. II Finals)
'92 Forney Jackrabbits (Reg. II Semi-Finals)
'95 Jefferson Bulldogs (District)

I'm going by the graduation years for the seniors on these teams, not the actual year (which would be the previous calendar year) they played if y'all get that.

HANDS DOWN, the best game I've seen was when Decatur played Sweetwater in the Region I D2 semifinals in Stephenville 2002, and everybody watched Dane hurl a bomb down the field to Christian on the 1yd. line.

1. Sealy during their title run. I'd say 1995 was their best year.
2. 1984 - Medina Valley
3. 1987 I believe is the year - Cuero

I wished I could comment on 3A, but our coaches never seem to get BH far enough in the playoffs to see the better teams.

I have never seen a coach playing on the field yet .

You have a real attitude problem with this coach thing.
