This Week's Poll...

This week is a HUGE week for folks in the towns of Bridgeport and Decatur... the 89th annual Battle of Big Sandy. Like most schools, the Bulls have their arch-rivals, the Decatur Eagles. While the Bulls will be HUGE underdogs, the team will still be fired up to play because of the atmosphere... The Poll knows that every school has their arch-rival... so the poll asks, "what is the main contributing factor to the rivalry?" Geography, past history, etc.... They all are important but which one helped the most to START making it a rivalry.

Also, go down below and post and let us know who your big rival is. And if you voted for "other" or just feel the need to elaborate, tell us more about what started your rivalry.

As always, polls should close on Friday...

Last Week's Poll...

Last week we had a record turn out on the poll!!! 103 folks participated and overwhelmingly said to leave the "NO PASS ~ NO PLAY" rules the way they are.

Liberty Vs. Dayton is still a rivalry although we don't currently play each other on a varsity level, we still have stories and past games to talk about...including the UIL ten year ban that was imposed upon each of us playing each other

i miss the days when Sinton and Refugio would start the season against each other. It broke my heart when they stopped playing each other. That was a great rivalry.

it is usually a tradition, but always has some event that it is based on...whether anyone actually remembers it or not, who knows...but i think location just makes it a better rivalry...also, one thing not included that i think makes a difference is the quality of the programs...when you have two quality programs that play each other every year for years and years, AND they happen to be adjacent towns or even in the same district...those are the ones everyone hears about when they play...

The Battle of the Boro's (Whitesboro Vs. Pottsboro) also known as the "Toilet Bowl" where i come from is always a big game for both towns because they both know it may be the only win they get all season

Hmmmm....looks like location and tradition are running a close one!

I voted tradition but location is right up there. You know....when a guy from one town starts dating a girl from the "rival" town ...... big trouble! That wouldn't happen if they weren't closely located.

ask snyder and sweetwater...HUGE rivalry there...but i like my theory:

Both towns have so much in common, that it becomes an ongoing battle to see who is actually better.

Actually Mustang04 I've heard the Sweetwater Snyder rivalry goes back to the time when west Texas decided that it needed a University to challenge UT and a&m, there were 5 towns in consideration for the college Abilene, Sweetwater, Snyder, Lubbock and some other town that isn't important. Abilene won the bid for the college but it was later discovered they had used corrupt methods to obtain the bid, so abilene gave its vote to Sweetwater, the other town gave its vote to Lubbock and it was deadlocked with Snyder left to give the deciding vote, which they gave to Lubbock, and this is the starting point of Swater Snyder rivalry and a college we know as Texas Tech. Another rumor on how the rivalry started involes bothe schools having live mascots and Sweetwater poked out the Tigers eyes and Snyder killed our Mustang, but it doesnt sound like a realistic story

Is your son by any chance dating a girl from Ingleside???

Ha....not now, but he did date an Ingleside cheerleader a couple of years ago.

Even back in my day (don't ask) it tended to "tick" people off. I think has something to do with men and their territorial instincts.......:D :D :D :D :D

Whatever the reason, it's still going strong today!

I think tradition and location play a big part (it doesn't hurt to have a "little" disdain).

How about tradtion and location Cameron and Rockdale are 16 miles apart and have the Battle Of the Bell (gonna be awsome this year)

BIG BLUE DEFENSIVE END

The Battle of the Bell. We're celebrating our 50th year anniversary of the Battle of the Bell this year. Cameron and Rockdale are both undefeated in district. As c-town_balla said, we're only 16 miles apart, and this is a very tradition-rich game. I think this is the best poll yet, sleepy.

Castleberry vs. Lake Worth. Our towns are only a few miles apart even though we haven't played each other in football recently we still compete against each other in other sports. This year is different because the mayors are even involved. If we win the Mayor of River Oaks will paint the Mayor of Lake Worth heads red and if they win the Mayor of Lake Worth will paint the head of our Mayor green. A playoff spot is on the line as well with the loser having little if any chance left for a chance to make it to the big dance.

i think it could be any one of these...like kennedale and everman (a new rivalry, but still...) i think it was the upset a couple years back that started it all...and the upset the year after that...hehehe...good poll

"The Battle of Highway 100" Port Isabel vs. Los Fresnos

Despite the fact Los Fresnos is now a 5A school, both schools still choose to play each other.

For one week out of the entire year, the inhabitants of the only two school districts located on the entire stretch of State Highway 100 hate each other's guts, but the rest of the year, the two support each other in anything they do.
