Lady Leopards Lose to Pilot Point in 4

The Pilot Point Lady Cats solidified their playoff hopes while dimming
the post-season hopes of the Gainesville Lady Leopards Friday.
Pilot Point downed the Lady Leopards 25-19, 23-25, 25-10, 25-11 at PPHS.
That improved the Lady Cats' record to 5-2 in District 6-3A. Gainesville
fell to 3-4, two games behind Pilot Point for the third and final
playoff berth with just three games to play.
Gainesville (11-20 overall) fell behind 7-1 in the first game as Pilot
Point's Rachel Carroll served six straight points. Gainesville finally
got a sideout after a kill by Amy Scott, who later added another kill to
get the Lady Leopards within 4.
Pilot Point's Eriele Johnson then took over, registering 3 kills. Audrey
Svane served three points to push the Lady Cat lead to 15-5.
Gainesville tried to come back thanks to kills by Sharday Brown and
Jordy Phyffer. Kelsey Haverkamp added a kill and Whitney Caraway served
an ace as the Lady Leopards pulled within 16-9. Kills by Scott and
Haverkamp, a block by Phyffer, and a good serve by Laci Felderhoff got
GHS within 5 (20-15). But that would be as close as they would get.
The second game was close throughout. Gainesville took an early lead on
two service points from Haverkamp and a block by Phyffer and Leah
Sanchez. Jacquelyn Smith added a good serve to put Gainesville ahead
6-3. But Janelle Davis served four straight points for Pilot Point to
put them back in front.
The Lady Leopards got the lead back thanks to a dink by Scott and three
service points by Jessica Lopez. Gainesville went up 14-11 after another
good serve by Felderhoff.
Pilot Point came right back and eventually took an 18-16 lead. From
there, the game went back and forth. Sanchez had two straight good
serves to put GHS ahead, then Svane had a service point to give the Lady
Cats the lead back.
But Gainesville got kills by Scott, Haverkamp and Lopez down the stretch
to win the second game 25-23.
The third game was close early thanks to kills by Haverkamp and Lopez.
But with Pilot Point leading 9-7, Johnson served nine straight points to
put the Cats up 18-7. The Lady Leopards finally broke the serve, but
after another sideout. Carroll served four more points for the Lady Cats
and they won the third game 25-10.
Pilot Point continued their domination in the fourth game. Johnson again
was the top server. She started the game with five straight points.
Gainesville tried to stay close as Phyffer had a tip, Smith had a good
serve and Scott had a kill, but the Lady Cats still raced out to a 14-6
lead.
Caraway served three points including an ace to get the Lady Leopards
within 6 (17-11), but after a sideout, Johnson served the last seven
points to give the Lady Cats the 25-11 win in game four and the match.
