In your opinion, what drives a athlete to advance to the next level and be successful week in week out.

I wish it was mainly heart.

Sometimes it is just plain athletisism, but also it is greed a lot of times.

For motivation, how bout' several million $$$ in about 5-6 years? Seriously, I believe a young athlete has an easier road if they have all areas of their life complete and under control. Many will make it purely on athletic ability, but it will be much harder for them to sustain and keep from "throwing" away than those who have taken a "higher" road.

In the case of football.

You must be a football player 365 days a year. You have to eat drink and sleep football, while the others are busy just eating, drinking and sleeping. You have to be a student of the game, have the desire to get better each and every day, and you have to work harder at it when you don't want to work at all. You have to have the courage to play through the pain, keep trying to win when the game is lost, and be an example to your brothers when there is no hope of success. You have to expect to win, and you have to hate to lose. You need a killer instinct, but a switch that you can turn off when the game is over. But most of all, you have to LOVE the GAME.

It all starts from when your young. If your parents keep your head on straight and this is what you won't. Then your dreams will come to reality. Hard work pays off:D .

i dont think heart has anything to do it...heart doesnt create 6'2" 215 lbs or a 4.0 40....thats an athlete...

if you were a coach and wanted to win, would you rather have a team of 5'6" 150lb scrubs with lots of heart, or a team of 6'2" 215 lb athletes???

I think a great athlete is only the result of God given ability. You are either born with it or you are not.

A great player (whether it is football, baseball or jump rope) is the result of the sum of his efforts, his coaching (including his parents), and his desire (and in some instances how many steroids has he taken).

If I was a HS coach I'd take the scrubs in a heartbeat, ESPECIALLY if I wanted to win. But the huge thing at the college level is the chromosomes you got from momma and daddy. I knew a guy with almost zero heart for the game who was from my dad's hometown. The guy went on to play in the NFL (Eric Moulds, George County HS in MS/Buffalo Bills), but when he graduated from HS he was a basketball player who didn't have the height to go to the next level. But he was about 6'1" coming out of HS and could run a 4.4 40 and had some very soft hands... and every D-1 school in the SEC wanted him.

I wish it was mostly heart that got you to the show, but sadly it's not.
