Do you think the "Swinging Gate" formation employed by many teams on extra points works?

i've seen it work for pilot point on film... we always practiced in case a team ran it, but we never had it ran against us...

I think teams come out in the formation just to make there be 1 more thing for an opposing team to prepare for

Same here Keith. For the last 10 years or so I haven't seen anybody not "swing" back over to the hash and execute.

Someday, somwhere, when you least expect it, the opposition is gonna mess up and not cover it correctly, then WHAM, it'll score.;)

I have broadcast many games this year and I have seen the swinging gate work in 5 games, twice in one game. So teams still do it because it can still be effective. It seems to work best after a long touchown when the other team is in a bit of chaos because the team has scored so quick.

The simple key to defending it is to place a player everywhere they put one. If you mess up and only put one to defend against the center and qb, the qb scores. I've always wanted to see somebody try to break it just once. Line a speedster up on the inside and fly to intercept the pass and sail down the field untouched. Maybe then, people would stop using that stupid formation.:D

but until someone does do that, it will always be unstoppable

we always kept 2 line backers in the box... isnt the center an eligable receiever in this formation??

yes he is, and he is usually open, if he is covered, then the qb just runs it in.........easy money

thats why we kept 2 guys in the box.. 1 for the center, 1 for the QB

we also line the kicker up next to the qb as a pitch man.........who covers him?

LOL, what did you play in high school?

One of the reasons I think it is used is that often it makes the defense waste a timeout if they're not prepared. Just makes the defense think when it shouldn't have to.

it keeps the defense on guard at all time...even on special teams....i like it.....it might not do nothing but its fun to watch

Most team use it just to screw people up, but most just line up and break to the extra point....we did it once and it worked.

We ran swinging gate a bunch of times last year, and for the most part, it was really successful.

I've heard of coaches putting in 5 or 6 plays or different formations just to give next weeks opponent more to prepare for the following week. Then come out and not run any of it. It is all mind games.
