Lady Leopards Defeat Sanger in Five

The Gainesville Lady Leopards got back on track in a district matchup
against the Sanger Lady Indians Friday afternoon at the Leopard Den.
Each game was very tight as the Lady Leopards went the distance and won
in five games, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-8. The Lady Leopards
are now 10-19 overall and 2-3 in district play.
The Lady Leopards rebounded from their loss to Whitesboro earlier in the
week and had a new face on the team as freshman Laci Felderhoff was
called up as the starting setter in hopes to create a spark offensively
for the varsity squad.
It was back and forth for most of the first game early. But Lady Leopard
Jessica Lopez served for 10 straight points to pull away from the Lady
Indians midway through the game. The Lady Indians eventually broke the
serve and created a rally of their own. But Gainesville's defense, led
by Lopez who had 15 digs total throughout the match, took over and
helped force sideouts and the Lady Leopards won game one 25-19.
Game two was another close game as the teams swapped points back and
forth for most of the game. Jordy Phyffer had a couple key blocks that
helped the Lady Leopards score to tie late in the game. Sanger was too
much for the Lady Leopards in game two, winning 25-21.
The Lady Leopards came back in game three with the help from Kelsey
Haverkamp who served seven straight points late in the game to help
Gainesville take the lead and eventually pull away with the win for a
25-22 victory in game three.
Game four was even closer than the previous three games as Sanger and
Gainesville again traded points back and forth constantly. Gainesville
came back from a 23-21 Sanger lead to tie 23-23. Gainesville then got up
24-23 on Sanger with the help from a kill from Sharday Brown and needed
one point to win the game and the match. But Sanger came back and tied
it 24-24. Sanger scored the next point in the game as well for a 25-24
lead. It seemed like Gainesville had tied the game again after Phyffer
had killed the ball past two Sanger defenders, but the referee called an
over the net infraction and gave the point to Sanger which helped them
pull out a 26-24 victory.
It came down to game five and both teams started out as they had in each
of the previous four games, trading off points. Gainesville finally got
on a scoring run behind the serving of Haverkamp who served six straight
points for a 13-6 lead. Gainesville and Sanger traded off points and the
Lady Leopards won 15-8. Brown had four kills in the fifth game from the
left side of the court to help propel Gainesville to the win.
New acquisition Felderhoff was a key part of the offense as she
accounted for 19 assists for the match and Phyffer tallied five blocks
to lead the defense.
Head coach Becky Robinson was pleased with her team's victory saying
that her team played consistent and no one player stood out as each
player contributed in the win for Gainesville. Robinson also said that
Felderhoff was brought up from the freshman team because she plays smart
and is easily coached and helped her team get tighter on the net
offensively.
The Lady Leopards will look to keep their momentum as they are back on
the court Tuesday at home against Pottsboro beginning with the freshmen
at 5 p.m. The junior varsity will follow after that. The varsity match
will be last.

I know it's not 3A, but Collinsville's volleyball team has a 20-0 record. They are a very disiplined(sp) team.
