Here's a picture of Cuero's 1974 Championship team (back to back champs)

The juniors on this team never lost a game, Varsity or below, until the 1975 Championship game against Ennis, which was the end of their 44 game winning streak...

(Picture from the Cuero Record, btw)

They will run 80 miles an hour in a 150 ft.:D

Thanks Old! He was in Freer (I think) during the 50s and had some success there. I think they went to the quarterfinals in 1959 before losing to Palacios (I think) by a td.

That is right Old. He was an assistant probably during the early to 60s! When did he come to Refugio. Coach Akins was at Freer from 1960-61 to 1964-65.

Gobbla if so then he must have coached somewhere between time at Freer and Cuero. I don't remember him being there my high school years (1963-64 to 1966-67).

From 1970-1975, The Cuero Gobblers amassed 2 State Championships, 2 State Finals, 4 Semi Finals Championships, 4 Quarter Final Championships, 4 Regional Championships and 6 zone Championships .These Teams won 74 games ,became the first back to back undefeated State Championship team in AAA football(1973 and 1974), set the longest winning streak of all44 games in AAA football(1973,1974 and 1975), the 1974 team was voted as one of the all time top AAA Football teams by Dave Cambell's Texas Football Magazine .

"The team commitment to one another was an inseparable allegiance. There were no divisions of color, class or individualism .These 'on the field lessons' became anthems off the field as well. The leadership of our coaches imparted us a passion for the pursuit of unanimity, excellence and intolerance for egocentricities, racism or other social division ".

"The 1974 team was blessed with extraordinary tenacity, resilience and togetherness in knowing that it was a target of every foe, and accepting the challenge each week to defend the championship and to place an exclamation mark on the Gobbler dynasty" Jeff Ray captain of the 1974 team.
