Would you rather be big or fast? Which makes a better team

tmac

its a game of speed id rather be a 5'8 4.3 runnin back than a 6'3 4.8 runnin back.its a question of will also more than size and speed

Leon would like both.

Neither matters without endurance, but I would take speed

The ultimate player is Big Fast Strong and Smart. Plays every play like it is his last. Is so agressive that you have to keep him in a cage for the two hours before the game. His favorite position is "anywhere on defense". And he has got to love his momma.:)

Endurance??? The field is 100 yds long. This is not CC. Everyone would like to have a combination of the both ........but would you rather be viewed as a speed based team or a size based team???

PPHSfan

Both

YES

if i had to choose just one...i'd say speed....a few years back we had a RB that was 5'5" 150lbs who ran a 4.3-40yd...he gained well over 1000 2 or 3 yrs in a row.

I don't know.

If I had eleven kids that were 6'6 and weighed 275 lbs. But could only run 5.0 fortys. I think I could find a way to win with them. But if I had eleven kids that were 5'6 and weighed 150 lbs and and ran 4.4's I think it would be tough to compete.

Speed will get you farther than size will. All the size in the world won't help if you can't catch them.

SPEED. And lots of players that have it.

One of the best offensive linemen I've ever seen was 5'9", 190# (it was Jonas, StangFan). Here's a couple of old sayings for you:

It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog....

And speed kills.

CS_WILDCATS

I would take speed over size, but most teams that make it deep in the playoffs usually have both.

I would rather have a team with speed but I prefer a team with size - John Kerry

SPEED.. look at the 2 teams that won state last year and then rate the fastest teams in 3A last year.. I think you would notice something similar

The question was about the TEAM.

If I have to choose between ELEVEN big guys, and ELEVEN small fast guys, I would have to go with the size.

Give me eleven 6' 4" to 6' 6" 275lb 5.0 guys, against your ELEVEN 5' 7" 150lb 4.4 guys, and you are never gonna see my side of the line of scrimmage.

you wanna bet??? the 5'7" guys would be in the back field so quick that your guys would still be in their 3 point stances

5 flat for that size is pretty dern fast....make it more like 5.5...then we might can debate the point.

Looking at the RB position BH has had fast guys that couldn't shake a tackle. When they were hit they went down. On the other hand we have had bigger slower RB's that run over people. I'll take the Big back over the smaller fast one.

good size and no matter how fast you run this guy could walk and catch you

i'd take size...u can train urelf to become faster, but size is alot harder to gain, height-wise i mean, u dont control how much you grow

hey hupernikomen, my dad played college and pro-ball, and he ran a 4.64 at 6'5 275 lbs, so thats really movin it for that size

if u look at my profile, youll see my email address containg my full name, my last name is Ham, and my dads name was Robin

he walked on at West Texas State University, and by his senior year was one of the top offensive linemen out of any college, he was supposed to be one the first linemen picked for the NFL draft, but his last senior game, he tore every single tendon and ligament in his knee from a cheap shot someone got in after the play was over, he went through reconstructive knee surgery by famous orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thurston Dean Sr. and played, but no one was sure if his knee could handle anymore, and trust me, the stats about him i said are accurate because i have every program, newspaper artice, and magazine article written about him while he was playing for the WTSU Buffalos

your dad must have had alot of talent.. i know alot of guys (myself included) who weighed 90 pounds less them him and could never run that fast

mustang04
10-06-2004, 05:10 PM
he really did, but he didnt get big until college, and plus he used to always dust me when we'd race, but i think the best attribute he had was not his speed/size ratio, but his strength, in college he benched 550lbs, and when he went from greenbay to cleveland he squatted 1000lbs w/ 2 other guys, but they got fined by the coach, i remember when i was in 5th grade i think which made him like 37, i went out to our gym, and "spotted" him when he threw up 420lbs on the bench, and i counted the plates and all to make sure, why couldnt i have gotten his size

Speed. A big boy you could just chop. We played Blaine Hill of Gonzales, a huge RB, and we just took out his legs. You can't run over anybody without your legs, and you can't tackle someone you can't catch....nuff said

trust me, there are guys who have size and can take hits, even in there legs...the QB for Perryton 2 years ago, i cant remember his name, was AWESOME, and i remember going for his legs and nailing them, didnt phase him one bit, and other ppl tried too, he just kept moving them

A 4.64 would qualify as the fastest guy on a few teams out there. I was pretty fast for an OLB and I ran in the 4.8-4.9 range, depending on the stopwatch.:D

exactly, which is my point, i'd rather have size, cuz u can work-out and do things to make urself faster, but u can only get as big as ur body allows, i just wish i was about 3 inches taller

Do you really think you can train a 5.0 to run a 4.5? You can only squeeze so much speed out of a ballplayer.

You can train a 5.0 to run a 4.5 a lot easier than you can train a 5' 7" 150lb kid to be 6' 4" 260 :D

good point.. these big guys cant pick up and carry the ball carrier into the endzone for a safety every play so with out speed all the big guys can do is contain them..

I think to really end this conversation is what kinda offense do you run?? if you run a spread offense of course your gonna want the little fast dudes.. but if you are an outdated old school power football team then take the big sluggish guys
