Attention School Coaches and Administrators: Regarding Friday Night Lights Promotions

From UIL Web Site

School coaches and administrators should be aware of potential eligibility problems that could arise in conjunction with ongoing promotional activities for the movie Friday Night Lights.

Any items sent to schools affiliated with the promotion of Friday Night Lights must be made available to ALL STUDENTS at the school on the same basis. The UIL amateur rule would prohibit such items from being made available only to athletes or members of a specific athletic team or program. Should items be distributed to student-athletes only, those students would be ineligible for varsity athletics for violation of the amateur rule.

These items could include trips to the movie premiere, movie tickets, CD's, DVD's, handkerchiefs and any other promotional item.

If there are questions in reference to this situation, please contact the UIL Athletic Department immediately for additional information.

Questions or comments about the Athletic Department should be directed to Charles Breithaupt, uilath@uts.cc.utexas.edu

UIL rules are UIL rules. Many people think that the UIL is too stringent in some of the rules they have made. However, this rule was not made to fit this particular situation(Friday Night Lights). Its been around for a long time. They have just published a clarification in order to let it be perfectly clear as to the promotion being put on by the movie company. That way not athlete or team is caught unawares.
